State Representative Katie Dempsey (R-Rome) was recently honored by the United States Department of Defense for her dedication to improving the quality of life of service members and their families. The Department of Defense awarded Rep. Dempsey with a certificate of appreciation for her leadership on Georgia’s Voluntary Veterans’ Preference Employment Act,
“Our military veterans and or House Bill 443, during the 2015 legislative session of the Georgia General Assembly their families have made tremendous sacrifices, and authoring legislation to enact positive, life-changing policies to support their return to Georgia’s workforce is just a small way I can express my appreciation and gratitude for all that these men and women have done for our country. Every business can benefit from the leadership skills, proven dedication, and teamwork that veterans bring to a position,” said Rep. Dempsey. “I am humbled to receive this recognition from the United States Department of Defense and to serve the interests of our veterans in district 13, and all of Georgia.”
HB 443, sponsored by Representative Dempsey, permits employers to create policies that provide preferential hiring, promoting, or retention to veterans of the armed forces of the United States. HB 443 passed both the House and Senate in March before being signed into law by Governor Deal on May 5, 2015.
Representative Katie Dempsey represents the citizens of District 13, which includes portions of Floyd County. She was elected into the House of Representatives in 2006, and currently serves as Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Human Resources.
The fourth suspect wanted in the armed robbery and murder of 21-year-old Daniel Leon has been arrested. According to Polk County Jail records, 17-year-old Hennessey Frazier was arrested just after 7:00p.m. Monday by Cedartown Police.
Three other suspects were arrested on Monday in connection with the October 29 murder.
Cedartown Police Chief Jamie Newsome said Brandon Wilson age 17 of a Vance Avenue address, and a 15 year old juvenile were both arrested Friday on armed robbery and murder charges.
Tyler Davis, 18, of an East Ellawood Avenue address was arrested on Monday, on armed robbery and murder charges.

An apparent drug deal – conducted in the parking lot of a Lafayette restaurant, landed three people behind bars.
Task Force Commander Pat Doyle said law enforcement received a tip regarding a possible drug deal set to take place at that location around noon that day.
They simply set up operations across the street and watched – until they decided that it was time to go in; those taken into custody included 20 year old Dillon Wesley Johnson, charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute; Amber Nicole Queen, 25 – charged with Violation of the Georgia Controlled Substances Act and Cody Brian Stoker age 21 – charged with Violation of the Controlled Substances Act.
All three were charged with Using a Communications Device in the Commission of a Crime.

A former youth football coach recently accepted a plea agreement on charges of producing and possessing obscene materials.
Former DeKalb County youth football coach Ronald Berry, age 52, has recently entered into a plea agreement on the charges of possessing and producing obscene materials. Berry was sentenced by Circuit Judge Jeremy Taylor to a ten year split-sentence – meaning that he will have to serve two years of the sentence, followed by five years probation.
At the time that crime occurred last October (2014), Sheriff Jimmy Harris said investigators determined that Berry was allegedly producing pornographic materials inside his home; he was arrested after investigators seized computers and cell phones from the residence.
Berry coached defense for an eleven and twelve year old Plainview football team which had no affiliation with the school.
In addition to prison time, he was ordered to pay $1,500 in attorney's fees, along with court costs and a bail bond fee.
He will remain in the DeKalb County Detention Center, until his transfer to a Department of Corrections facility.

A 44 year old Lafayette man is currently facing a long list of charges, after he led police on a foot chase through town, managing to get away for a period of a few hours.
It all started with a traffic stop when a man sitting in the back of a PT Cruiser bailed out and ran after giving officers a phony name and date of birth.
The suspect, identified as Robert Nolan Murphy – was later found hiding the attic area of an apartment on Napier Street.
According to reports, officers found a spoon and a digital scale underneath the car seat he’d been sitting in during the initial stop.
Both tested positive for meth residue; police also found syringes at the scene.
Murphy was already wanted on two felony warrants; he was additionally charged with the possession of meth, giving a false name and obstruction.
