The Georgia Department of Labor has a big Job Expo planned for Wednesday. The event is at the Convention Center in Dalton from 1-5 p.m. It's the second phase of a Labor Department Job Readiness push, the first of its kind in the area. A 5-million dollar construction project broke ground last week at Lafayette High School, The project will add six new classrooms and a 14-thousand square foot field house to the campus. It will also replace the heating and cooling systems for the school gym. The additions are expected to be finished by summer. The new classrooms will eliminate the mobile classrooms now being used. The new will house will have football locker rooms, a large wresting room and training room. A locker room for competition cheerleaders, and separate weight rooms for male and female students.
A Summerville man reportedly was stabbed in a fight Saturday. According to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department report, Jeffrey Adam Bishop, of a Maplewood Drive, Summerville, address, told deputies that he had gotten into a fight with another man who stabbed him in the back. Not only was Bishop stabbed, but he was also hit with an aluminum broom, according to the report. The incident occurred at the Maplewood apartments just before 8 p.m. on Saturday. Bishop's girlfriend was a witness to the fight. After the stabbing, the suspect and his girlfriend reportedly left in a white four-door passenger car, possibly a Nissan, according to the report. Bishop was taken by Redmond EMS to Floyd Medical Center, according to the report. The report does not indicate why the fight occurred, nor does it indicate that the suspect has been arrested.
Current Chattooga County Sheriff's Department personnel interested in being hired into the new administration recently filled out an applications. The applications for consideration were made available by Sheriff-Elect Mark Schrader. They were to have been turned into the County Commissioner's office by November 16. Current Captain with the Sheriff's Department Ken Anderson said most employees have filled out an application to work under the new administration. According to a letter to applicants contained in the 20-page application, Schrader says employment includes a complete background investigation, drug screening, ploygraph testing and in-depth interview. The letter also states that those offered employment will be subject to a 12-month working test period during which performance will be evaluated prior to an offer of continuing employment. Anyone with questions concerning the application are referred to Kevin Woods. While campaigning for office Schrader named Woods his chief deputy. Woods is the only person that has been guaranteed a job within the new administration. Since being elected in November, Schrader has spent most of his time out of town in training.
