In its regular meeting Thursday the Trion Town Council announced that it received a $40,000 grant from the Tillotson Charitable Foundation to be used for playground equipment in its park.
The council also discussed applying for a recreation trail grant for a walking/biking trail starting at the river and looping around up Highway 27, then around to the ball field and to the track field. The trail will be asphalted and will be similar to the recreation trail in Rome.
Also, the council voted to rent a billboard to be placed on Highway 27 between the town and Walmart in recognition of the three-time state champion Trion HIgh school Competition Cheerleaders. The team has won state for the past three consecutive years and five of the last six years.
In other business the council named town clerk Missy Duncan Election Superintendent; Cherly Craig, assistant superintendent; and Jackie Weaver, absentee ballot clerk. The council also voted to hire former town clerk Patty Hill as an independent contractor to help the women in the town's office at City Hall.
The council also had a first reading on an amendment to its Building Code ordinance and voted to close its HRA Payroll and Interest Checking Account, an account that has sat dormant for a good while.
A Chattooga County Couple reported on Thursday that their Wilson Road, Summerville, home had been ransacked and burglarized. Randall and Destiny Abernathy reported to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office that someone had entered the home through an open bedroom window. The couple reported that the house was ransacked and missing was a bank debit card, approximately 500 DVDs, a money jar containing $50 to $70, and a Craftsman tool bag containing pink tools. The value of the stolen items is valued at $2,770, according to the report.

A fatal motorcycle wreck in Dade County last week, turned out to be part of a crime spree in progress. According to reports, 29-year-old Brittan David Burnett. of Calhoun, died when the motorcycle he was riding crossed the center lane of Highway 189 in Lookout Mountain and struck a car head-on. After an investigation, it was determined that the motorcycle had just been stolen from a Lookout Mountain home. Two other Calhoun residents, 23-year-old Randy Corvi and 24-year-old Daniel Shall were following behind Burnett in a car and witnessed the wreck. They reportedly fled the scene and when their car ran out of gas across the Tennessee State Line, officers found it too, had been stolen. The vehicle that was struck in the fatal accident was driven by 71-year-old Glenda Blevins of Trenton. Her injuries were not life threatening
