On Monday it was announced that Paradise Garden is the recipient of an almost half million dollar private grant from Art Place America.
The $445,000 grant will be used for restoration and programatic needs for the site and is greared toward helping Paradise Garden and Chattooga County perform creative place making, according to Jordon Poole, director of the Paradise Garden Foundation.
Creative place making is an initiative that can be embraced and utilized for cultural heritage tourism as well as for arts initiatives such as a vision gallery, the new Folk Art america gallery that recently opened and having people come to Chattooga County and see that it is an artistic place up in the North Georgia Mountains.
Poole said when the grant was initially applied for the need for restoration was great. He said some of that has been done. However he said the garden is still without electricity and running water. Paradise Garden is open on Saturday and Sunday and there are plans to open the garden during the week in the future.

(ATLANTA) —For hurricane season, the Georgia Emergency Management Agency/Homeland Security (GEMA) has revised its website and launched a new webcast. The purpose of this upgrade is to make the most up-to-date information more accessible to Georgians before, during and after disaster. The revamped website, www.gema.ga.gov, boasts a modern, colorful design and is divided into user-specific sections to make it easier for site visitors to find the information they need. A new multi-media section includes the GEMA News Minute webcast, produced in partnership with the Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB). This 90-second webcast is released every Tuesday and covers a wide range of topical information.
“The resources that GPB provided us in putting together this webcast have allowed us to produce a professional and informative product that enables us to better engage our audience,” says GEMA/Homeland Security Director Charley English.
In addition, visitors also will have access to real-time updates, such as current weather conditions, open shelters and terrorism alerts. Users looking for preparedness information will find a link to GEMA’sReady Georgia campaign and the downloadable Ready Georgia app.

Gordon County Sheriff Mitch Ralston is looking for information about a body found along Interstate 75.
The sheriff said about 10 a.m. Tuesday a heavy machinery operator reported finding a body in an open field near Interstate 75 and Red Bud Road (SR 156) near Calhoun.
Investigators said the body was that of a man "in an advanced stage of decomposition."
The location was very near the city limits so Calhoun police responded as well. Detectives estimated that the body had been there for several days and maybe weeks. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) was called in to assist with the investigation.
They say there was identification on or around the body, which has been sent to the State Crime Laboratory in Decatur to undergo a post – mortem examination. No cause of death has been determined.
They could not tell the age nor the race. The body was dressed in blue athletic-type shorts with a yellow lining, black Nike athletic shoes sized approximately 8 1/2 – 9 1/2, and a camouflage baseball cap with the inscription "Milan Supply" on front in red letters and "Penyair Water" on back in blue letters.

The City of Summerville's annual 4th of July Celebration is at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 30m at The Summerville Recreation Center. City offices and the maintenance department will be closed on July 6 basically as a comp day for working June 30th for the 4th of July Celebration. The Summerville Council's next meeting is July 9.

The City of Summerville will meet tonight during its regular monthly session at 5 p.m. tonight (June 11) at Summerville City Hall.
At tonight's meeting the council is expected to have a public hearing regarding changing the name of University Street to Veteran's Memorial Drive and to hear comments on the FYE 2013 budget.
Also the council is expected to approve the purchase of firewords for the July 4th celebration.
A Summerville man was arrested and charged with drug violations by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Office Drug Task Force Monday.
According to Drug Task Force office Trey Skelton, the task force received at tip that Kyle Devonte Stevens of an East 6th Street address was selling marijuana.
When task force officers saw Stevens driving down the road they stopped his vehicle on East 6th Street and upon approaching the vehicle smelled a strong odor of green marijuana. After getting consent to search by Stevens and a passenger in the vehicle officers found marijuana on Stevens, who at that point ran from officers. Skelton said they caught up with Stevens after about 200 yards. Stevens was charged with possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, possession of drug related objects and obstruction of an officer.
