A Summerville man was arrested Wednesday on a first degree forgery charge stemning from an incident that occurred back in January.
According to the incident provided by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department, Kurtis Chadwick Watkins of Summerville is accused of writing over $9,000 of checks on the bank account of a Chattooga County woman without her knowledge.
According to the police report, Watkins knew the victim and was writing checks on her account.
The Lyerly Town Council and others interested in community beautifucation will gather at the town park at 9 a.m. Saturday morning for the town’s annual clean up day. Town Clerk Joy Hampton explains what goes on on Clean Up Day.
Clean up day normally lasts until about noon, according to Hampton.The town’s been participating in Clean up Day since 2010. She says it’s varied from year to year how many people have shown up to help but last year the turn out was good.Nno need to call beforeand just show up at the park at 9 a.m.
The Second Annual Miss Chattooga Relay Pageant will be Saturday March 24 at 2:00 pm. The event will be held at the the Trion Recreation Center. Participants are from ages 0 to 18 . There will be a $3 entrance fee for adults all proceeds go to the American Cancer Society. The event is being hosted by Redmond Family Care in Trion. The Coosa River Basin Initiative/Upper Coosa Riverkeeper (CRBI) kicks off its spring paddling schedule this Saturday, March 24, with a 15-mile trip on the Etowah River near Canton, and continues the fun with six more trips planned through May 5.
Saturday’s paddle takes participants through heart of Cherokee County and the former haunts of the Cherokee Indians, stroking over the river’s Native American fish weirs and through a surprisingly wild landscape in one of Georgia’s fastest growing counties.
Shuttles will be provided for a small fee and boat rentals are available. The trip is free to CRBI members. Non-members may pay membership dues beginning at $15 at at www.coosa.org Pre-registration is required.

Mr. John Christopher “Chris” Wyatt, age 46, of Summerville, passed away Friday, March 16, 2012 at the Redmond Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Wyatt was born in Montgomery, Alabama on January 16, 1966, son of John William Wyatt and Linda Carl Penton Wyatt, and for the last ten years had been residing with his caregiver, Mrs. Betty St. Clair of Creek’s End Personal Care Home.
Mr. Wyatt is survived by his parents, John and Linda Wyatt; sisters, Merri Shannon Waters and Amy Leah Williams; caregivers, Betty St. Clair and Greg Swinford; and a number of friends with whom he lived.
Funeral Services for Mr. Wyatt will be held Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 3:00 P.M. (EDT) in the Chapel of the Mason Funeral Home with Dr. Jerry Mahan and Rev. Ricky Studdard officiating. Interment will follow on Monday at 2:00 P.M. (EDT) in the Chilton Memorial Gardens in Clanton, Alabama.

Mr. Donnie Clyde Burrage age 62 of Lafayette passed away Saturday. He was born August 8, 1949 to the late Thomas Lester & Fannie Lorine Greene Burrage. He was an employee of the City of Lafayette and Church of God by faith.

Mrs. Helen Parker Hammond, age 83, of Cloudland, Georgia, passed away Thursday, March 15, 2012 at the Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Mrs. Hammond was born in Trion, Georgia on April 27, 1928, daughter of the late Jesse Parker and Bessie Wilbanks Parker. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Church of Christ and prior to retirement, had worked with the Revco Corporation. Mrs. Hammond was preceded in death by her brothers, Charles Parker and John Parker and a sister, Frances Gray.
Mrs. Hammond is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Stan and Meagan Hammond and Marc and Teresa Hammond; Grandchildren and their spouses, Tiffany and Jud Westbrook, Jason and Katie Hammond, Heath and Brooke Hammond, Holly and Landon Bryant, and Amelia Lively; great grandchildren, Trey and Madelyn Westbrook, Lexi and Heather Hammond, Brody Bryant and Carol Ann Cash; Special Friends, Opal Sprayberry and JoAnn Clements; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services for Mrs. Hammond will be held Sunday, March 18, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. in the chapel of the Mason Funeral Home with Minister Hugh Glaze officiating. Private interment services will be held at a later date in the Old Trion Cemetery.

A former officer with the Rome Police Department pleaded guilty to theft by taking and violation of his oath of office charges this morning in Floyd County Superior Court and was sentenced to two years in prison and three years probation.
Kerry Duane Wagner of 20 Conasauga Court, Rome, was accused of stealing about $25,000 from September, 2006 to September, 2010 from the Coosa Valley Fraternal Order of Police, according to District Attorney Leigh Patterson.
Wagner paid all the money back, according to court documents.
He was sentenced under the First Offender Act by Judge Jack Niedrach.
The charges are not related to his duties as a Rome police officer. Wagner had been treasurer of the Coosa Valley FOP since 2002, said Ghee Wilson, president of the FOP.
The FOP hosts several charity events, the largest is Christmas with Santa Cops, where officers take needy children shopping for Christmas gifts.
In November of 2010, the Coosa Valley FOP issued a news release stating that the new treasurer had discovered some discrepancies in the bookkeeping.
“When the new treasurer assumed control of the books he found several reoccurring transactions which included ATM and dining purchases,” the news release said. “The matter was addressed with Wagner and he immediately offered to reimburse the money.”
The FOP turned the matter over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which turned their findings over to Patterson.
After the allegations were discovered, the FOP adopted new policies that address purchases and expense payments.
A Summerville man that’s been on the run from Chattooga County sherriff’s deputies since February was arrrested on drug charges Wednesday. According to Josh Brock, agent with the Chattooga County Narcotics Unit, 26-year-old Otis Daniel Jr., of Lewis Street, Summerville, had allegedly sold marijuana and ecstacy to a confidential informant between December 5 2011 and Februrary 2, 2012. He was on of several for which the sherrif’s department obtained arrest warrants for drug charges back on Feburaru 2. Daniel was arrested in the West Rome area of Floyd County at a Drexel Drive address after local officals received a tip that he sold a vehicle to someone living across the street from that residence. He was booked into the Chattooga County Jail on Wednesday.
