Lora Frances Tucker Norton, Obit (M)

Mrs. Lora Frances Tucker Norton, age 96, of Summerville, GA, died Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at Oakview Health and Rehabilitation.

Mrs. Norton was born September 24, 1926, in Centre, AL, daughter of the late David Thomas and Della Dora Cash Tucker. She was a member of Four Mile Baptist Church, and prior to her retirement, was employed with Best Manufacturing. Mrs. Norton loved her church, her family, and enjoyed traveling and growing flowers.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Norton was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Norton, Jr.; an infant daughter, Beverly Diane Norton; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her son, Larry (Myra) Norton; daughters, Joan (Dale) Willingham, Linda (Emory) Tallent, and Karen (David) Fletcher; brothers, Jamie Tucker, Leon Tucker, and John Tucker; a sister, Ann Brown; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, March 13, 2023, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Doyle Kelley officiating. Interment will follow in Summerville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Rob Kelley, Brian Hammitt, David Fletcher, Jr., Eric Norton, Justin Hammitt, Jacob Hammitt, Evan Fletcher, and Carter Sligh.

Mrs. Norton will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Monday.

Summerville City Council Interviews City Manger Candidates Monday Night

The Summerville City Council held a called meeting on Monday evening at 5:30 PM at Summerville City Hall.  The main item on the agenda for yesterday’s meeting was to conduct interviews with the three finalists for the City Manager position.  The three candidates interviewed were interim city manager, Andrea Surratt along with Philip Robinett, who has worked as city manager in Charleston, Missouri and former Chattooga County Commissioner Jason Winters.

Now that the interview process is complete, the Council hopes to make an announcement on who will be hired as the new city manager at next Monday’s regular council meeting.

Chattooga Songfarmers Gathering This Saturday March 11th

The Chattooga Songfarmers will be having a gathering this Saturday at the Fairway Recreation Center located 81 Senior Drive in Summerville.  The event will be held from 1 to 4 pm.  In addition to all the great music, Reita’s fried pies, homemade ice cream, jellies and jam, soft drinks, and Brunswick Stew and chili will be available!  All musicians are welcomed and audience participation is encouraged!

Viola Pledger Lawman, Obit (ER)

MRS. VIOLA PLEDGER LAWMAN, age 100, of Marietta, Georgia, formerly of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023, in Marietta. Mrs. Lawman was born on March 16, 1922, in Summerville, Georgia to the late Cicero and Ida Mitchell Pledger. She was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church and was retired from Bohannon’s Store. In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Thomas Lawman, a sister-Oneida Owens, and brothers-Bill Pledger and Winston Pledger.

Surviving are daughters, Deborah Lawman Gerber, Linda Lawman Johannes, and Nancy Lawman Moon; grandsons-Bill Moon, Keith Moon, Travis Wright, Greg Wright, and Nathan Wright; several Great Grandchildren, Great Great Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 7th, at 2:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home, interment in Summerville Cemetery. The Family will receive friends Tuesday from 1 until 2 P.M. at the Funeral Home. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Ladies Sunday School Class of South Summerville Baptist Church.
