Deer Season (Archery) Starts This Saturday In Georgia

With the start of the fall hunting season this weekend, the Department of Natural Resources is reminding Georgia’s hunters to keep safety first.  Archery season opens on Saturday and state officials are reminding hunters to be sure to practice safety – especially with tree stands.  During the 2023-2024 season, 14 of 29 total incidents were tree stand use related, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division.

Man Drops Bag Of Meth During Traffic Stop

A sixty-one-year-old Chattooga County man was arrested last week on DUI charges after a traffic stop in the Mountain View area.  According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy observed the man’s vehicle driving in an erratic fashion on Mountain View Road and initiated a traffic stop.  When the driver stepped out of his vehicle, a small bag containing a white substance fell to the ground.  The bag was tested and the contents proved positive for methamphetamine.  Reuben Fife was arrested and charged with DUI for multiple substance, possession of methamphetamine and driving violations.

Walker County Commissioner’s Meeting This Week

The Walker County Board of Commissioners will be holding a meeting coming up on Thursday, September 12th starting at 6 PM.  On the agenda for the meeting, the commissioners will be discussing the Enterprise Fund and Special Revenue Budget and have a public hearing on the Fiscal Year 2025 General Fund Budget.  The commissioners are to vote on a measure that would establish a special Enterprise Fund and Special Revenue Budget for 2025. Georgia Senators Announce Funds For “Safer Streets”

U.S. Sens. Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff announced Georgia would be getting more than $37 million from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law’s Safer Streets program.  All of the allotted funds are going to Georgia’s metro areas.

Georgia Power Bills To Decrease Slightly Next Year

After a year of multiple price increases, Georgia’s largest utility company says that they have made more money than they thought they would and has received permission from the Georgia Public Service Commission to return some of those profits back to their customers in 2025.  But don’t get too excited – the average savings for most Georgia Power customer is less than the current cost of a gallon of gasoline.

Gas Prices Dip Slightly In Georgia

AAA says gas prices continue to decline at the pumps compared to a week ago. Georgians pay an average of $3.06 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was 8 cents less than a week ago, 19 cents less than a month ago, and 51 cents less than this time last year. It costs drivers an average price of $45.90 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are paying almost $3.00 less to fill up at the pump than a month ago.

Chattooga Will Have Extra Law Enforcement Presence Today

As students return to class today in the Chattooga County School System, there will be extra law enforcement presence.  Sheriff Mark Schrader told WZQZ News on Monday evening that he plans to have deputies posted at all five county schools today, in addition to the regularly assigned school resource officers.  The extra law enforcement presence comes after a threat was made by two students last week aimed at Trion High School.

There’s Hope For The Hungry At Central Avenue Baptist Thursday September 12th

There’s Hope for the Hungry will be at the Central Avenue Baptist Church in Trion this week on Thursday, September 12 to give away free groceries. Come between the hours of 10:00 am and 1:00 pm to get your free groceries. No ID is required. But you must be present to receive the food. Also, the Central Avenue Community Clothes Closet the same day at the church from 10:00 until 12:30. The church is located at 14074 Highway 27 in Trion next to Michael’s Body Shop.
