With Labor Day weekend’s holiday travel period kicking off tomorrow evening, you can expect to see plenty of state troopers on Georgia roadways over the next several days.
Chattooga County residents are paying more for housing – be that mortgages or rent, than they have in previous years. The latest numbers show that while housing costs remain remarkably lower than other parts of the country, Chattooga County residents have seen a marked increase over the past four years.
A fifty-seven-year-old Rome woman was arrested this week after she allegedly attacked an employ of a cable television company. Reports from the Rome Police Department indicate that the woman was at the Xfinity store on Turner McCall Boulevard and was angry about her service from the company. The woman allegedly got into an employee’s face, cursing and yelling, police said. Hopkins then picked up a metal folding chair and threw it at the employee. Monica Lee Hopkins was arrested and booked into the Floyd County Jail on charges of simple assault and disorderly conduct.
Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a James Street, Summerville address last week after reports of an altercation between family members. When deputies arrived on the scene, they learned that a woman had assaulted a family member during the course of an argument. According to a report from the sheriff’s office, the woman became angry when she learned that a family member planned to lock up her late-mother’s house due to suspicious activity in the neighborhood. The woman reportedly grabbed a chopping ax and threatened a family member who was, according to deputies “grilling and having a couple of beers” in the yard of the residence. The woman was screaming and cursing and overturned the grill in the course of the confrontation. The woman also reportedly took the family members cell phone. Thirty-eight-year-old Crystal Dawn Bates was arrested and charged with aggravated assault under the family violence act, criminal damage to property and interfering with an emergency telephone call and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
Tomorrow is the deadline to order fall mums from the Chattooga County FFA. The fundraising project is held annually and benefits the local FFA Program in Chattooga County Schools. This year’s Fall Mum Fundraiser will feature red, yellow, bronze, lavender and white mums. Ten-inch mums are $18 each and eight-inch mums are $10 each. A 21-year-old Rome man has been charged in a deadly shooting that occurred Tuesday afternoon.
According to a news release:
Police responded to the 300 block of Reynolds Street at around 3:51 p.m. and found 56-Brian Jeffrey Haynes of Rome dead inside a vehicle.
A man matching the suspect’s description given by eyewitnesses was detained nearby.
Nigel Oliver Hall, of a Reynolds Street address, was booked into the Floyd County Jail and charged with aggravated assault and murder.

A new report shows households have paid $27,427 more because of inflation since January 2021. The average household in the state is spending $1,074 more per month to buy the same goods and services as in 2021, according to a July report from the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee.
