The Georgia State Patrol will be out in full force and they encourage motorists to slow down and buckle up this Thanksgiving travel week. AAA predicts 54.6 million people will travel 50 miles or more from home this Thanksgiving… an increase over last year.  The day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year.

College & Career Readiness Performance Index Reports For Local Schools

The Georgia Department of Education released the 2022 College & Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI) last week.  Statewide, the numbers show that the pandemic affected students and State School Supt. Richard Woods is acknowledging that there is work to do for education to fully recover in the state.  Locally, some schools were above the state average and some below.

Survivor Of Crash That Killed Four Still In Serious Condition

There was one person that survived the fatal crash on October 30th in Lyerly that killed four people, including three Chattooga High School students.  Twenty-seven-year-old Winifer Reynoso Cigarroa was transported from the scene of the accident to Atrium Health Floyd in Rome, where she has remained in serious condition since the accident.

Christmas Lights Coming To Sloppy Floyd State Park

The Friends of Sloppy Floyd State Park were busy over the weekend getting things ready for the annual Christmas light display.  The Christmas lights will come on this coming Friday – the day after Thanksgiving.  The lights will be on throughout the month of December.  The Friends of Sloppy Floyd State Park have been doing the annual Holiday lights displays since 2011.  The Friends of Sloppy Floyd State Park is the local chapter of Friends of Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites. The group supports the park through volunteering, fundraising, and working to make the park a place for all to enjoy.

Future Of Local Charter High School In Jeopardy

The Georgia legislature has passed a bill that could ultimately close the doors at Mountain Education Charter High School (MECHS)at the end of the fiscal year June 30, 2023. Senate Bill (SB) 153 would strip the school of state funding and remove its charter status. MECHS has 18 campuses across North Georgia, including one here in Chattooga County.

The Sexual Assault Center of Northwest Georgia Board of Directors has appointed the following executive committee members for the 2023 calendar year: Ghee Wilson, president; Tina Brinson, vice president; Lisa Self, treasurer; Oliver Robbins, secretary; and Tannika King, past president.  The center serves the Northwest Georgia area, including Chattooga County.
