They are a familiar sight for Holiday shoppers all over, and once again this year the Salvation Army’s famous “red kettle” collection buckets will be collecting money for those in need this Christmas season.

Last week, the City of Summerville declined to renew a contract with current City Manager Janice Galloway. Galloway said that she was not expecting that move by the city council. Cedar Bluff, Centre and Gaylesville firefighters were dispatched to several reports of a mobile home fire just before 8AM, Central Time, on Saturday morning (November 19th).

Word came on Friday that Chattooga High School head football coach Shawn Peek was resigning. WZQZ News learned that Peek met with his players on Friday morning and announced his decision. Later in the day, Chattooga School Supt. Jared Hosmer confirmed that Peek was planning to retire. Late Friday, Chattooga Athletic Director J. Mark Turner announced, “Coach Sean Peek has resigned as Chattooga High School’s head football coach. We thank him for his service to our students and this program and wish him well in his future endeavors”. Peek came to Chattooga County in 2020 from South Pittsburgh, Tennessee.

It looks to be a promising year for Chattooga High School basketball. Both the Chattooga High School Boys and Lady Indians won in scrimmage games this past week. The Lady Indians played an defeated both Mt. Zion and Rockmart. The Chattooga High School Boys defeated Calhoun in scrimmage action. The Georgia Lottery says that the first quarter of this fiscal year (started July 1, 2022) is the most profitable first quarter since its inception in 1993. Profits transferred to the State Treasury’s Lottery for Education Account will amount to $389.9 million, surpassing last year’s first quarter transfer by $25.1 million.

This holiday season, the American Red Cross of Georgia encourages everyone to follow simple steps to prevent home fires from holiday decorations. Most home fires involving candles happen in December, when one in five home decoration fires also occur.
