Georgia Power is celebrating community service and holiday cheer again this year with its annual Light Up the Holidays contest. This year, the company wants to see how Georgia is lighting up the holidays, either through a holiday display or through acts of community service.

On Wednesday, November 16, 2022, Edgar Charles Neely, a 41 year old man from Rossville, Georgia was convicted by a Walker County jury for the charges of Aggravated Child Molestation and two counts of Child Molestation. The evidence, presented over the course of a three day trial, presided over by Judge Don W. Thompson, showed that Neely, who was a longtime friend of the victim’s mother, began sexually molesting the victim when she was only 14 years old and Neely was 37 years old.

Georgia gas price averages trends lower ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday. Chattooga County has one of the lowest gas price averages in the state.
Dr. Gary Voccio with the Northwest Georgia Department of Public Health is concerned about the number of flu cases in the area – and even more concerned that many people are not getting their flu vaccine.
While Georgia continues to enjoy a record-low unemployment rate, the statewide unemployment rate did edge up slightly during October, according to numbers released last week by the Georgia Department of Labor. But here in Chattooga County, the number of people applying for unemployment in October was quite a bit fewer than those applying for unemployment the previous month.
Public memorial services have been announced for the late Georgia House Speaker David Ralston. He passed away last Wednesday, following an extended illness, at 68 years old. Ralston had served as the speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives since 2010. Last week, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp ordered flags to be flown at half-staff in Speaker Ralston’s honor. Speaker Ralston will lie in state at the capital in Atlanta starting this morning at 11 AM. The public may pay their respects at the capital until 11 AM on Wednesday. To allow for an anticipated increase in holiday traffic, the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) has announced the suspension of lane closures on Georgia interstates and state routes beginning Wednesday, Nov. 23, at 5 a.m. until 10 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 27.
Americans are bracing for a costly Thanksgiving this year, with double-digit percent increases in the price of turkey, potatoes, stuffing, canned pumpkin and other staples. The U.S. government estimates food prices will be up 9.5% to 10.5% this year; historically, they’ve risen only 2% annually.
