Today is election day. Voters in Chattooga County are going to the polls to vote on several statewide races and one local contested race. Polls will be open from 7 AM – 7 PM. Remember, you will need to vote at your local precinct today.
Georgia tax collections continued strong last month, the state Department of Revenue reported.
Georgia gas prices continues to be one of the cheapest in the United States. Georgia drivers are now paying an average price of $3.12 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average is 3 cents less than a week ago, 7 cents less than a month ago, and 13 cents less than this time last year. It now costs $46.85 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Drivers are now paying a little over $1.00 less to fill-up at the pump compared to last month.
The timing of the rut, or breeding season, for white-tailed deer varies locally, especially in southern climates like Georgia’s. During the rut, the desire to breed causes deer to become more active compared to the rest of the year. Bucks move more and become less secretive, making them easier to hunt and more susceptible to being hit by motor vehicles.
The Calhoun Police Department is investigating a child’s death from a gunshot wound to the head that occurred in the early morning hours.

Early voting in Chattooga County wrapped up on Friday, and the Chattooga County Registrars Office says that 3,902 county residents cast their ballots early. Voters are voting on a variety of statewide offices, including U.S. Senator, Governor and other state constitutional offices. There is one local contest on the ballot. Democratic incumbent Lynn Hall is facing opposition from Republican Lori Brady for a seat on the Chattooga County Board of Education representing the Menlo area. Polls will open tomorrow morning at 7 AM and remain open until 7 PM. Remember to bring a picture ID when you go to vote.
The annual Chattooga County Young Farmer Pig Show & Auction is coming up this evening at 6 PM at the Chattooga County Ag Building.
More information was released late last week about the fatal crash that killed four on October 30th in Chattooga County. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the vehicle involved in the accident vaulted over 82 feet.
