Time to make your duck, dove and goose hunting plans for the year. The 2022-2023 migratory bird season hunting dates and regulations were recently approved by the Board of Natural Resources, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD).
A Summerville man called the police department this week after he found that someone had tried to break-in his home on Scoggins Street. The complainant told a responding officer that someone had tried to pry his front door open with some sort of tool. The responding officer observed the damage to the front door of the residence and the complainant said that the same thing had been done to the back door of the home. Nothing appeared to be missing from the residence, but the home owner did ask for extra patrol from the Summerville Police Department in the area.
Summerville Police received a report about a thief on Elm Street in Summerville. The complainant said that they were reviewing video surveillance from their home security camera and saw a man who appeared to be wearing a mask – but no shirt – rummaging through some items outside the residence. The man then apparently stole the camera that was recording him along with several outside cooking products and a power tool. The complainant identified a possible suspect as someone who rides a bicycle through the community on a regular basis. Police located the suspect, identified as thirty-five-year-old Billy Joe Stephens and arrested him. Stephens was charged with criminal trespass, theft by taking, and wearing a mask during the commission of a crime.

On Wednesday of this week, a Summerville man reported damage to his 1999 Ford F-150. The complainant showed a responding deputy where someone had damaged both tail lights and scratched the paint on the tailgate. There were also scratches on the hood. The complainant told the deputy that he thought he knew who had done the damage, but couldn’t prove it. A report was placed on file at the sheriff’s office.
The Honeybee Festival is returning to downtown LaFayette this weekend. A good portion of the downtown area will be closed starting at 5:30 PM this evening for vendors to set up. LaFayette Public Safety Director Stacey Meeks said that Honeybee Festival-goers may take small, portable coolers and lawn chairs to the various music events, Saturday. If you do need to travel through LaFayette on Saturday, you will want to detour to Duke Street which will remain open throughout the festival. Parking during the event will be available at the South Main Street Recreation Center and shuttle service will be available to the downtown festival area.
A forty-three-year-old Rome man was jailed Tuesday on charges of aggravated assault, aggravated battery, kidnapping, and theft by taking.
According to a press release, Cedar Bluff Police have made an arrest in connection with an attempted robbery at The County Store service station that occurred on May 6th, 2022.
The Chattooga County Board of Assessors is notifying property owners that annual notice of assessments will be mailed out next week on June 9, 2022. Property owners will start seeing the assessments in their mailboxes beginning Saturday, June 11, 2022.
