MR. EDWARD LEROY TEEMS, age 77, of Burton Road, Trion, Georgia, passed away Monday morning, May 30, 2022, at his residence. He was born on April 24, 1945 to the late Andrew (Pete) Teems and Floy Townsend Teems. Mr. Teems served in the U. S. Air Force in Viet Nam, later retiring from the U. S. Army. In addition to His Parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, the late Barbara Newsome.
Dixie Specialty Fiber has shuttered their manufacturing facility in Trion. The closing of the business affected around 80 workers and also was a blow to the Trion Industrial Park. The Town of Trion had donated twelve acres of land from the park to the company. The company informed the Town of Trion that they were ceasing all operations at the plant. In addition to the donation of land, the Town of Trion had also give a large tax abatement to the company that was founded in 2018. The death of one of the owners of the company shortly after manufacturing began in Trion and the COVID-19 pandemic have been cited as reasons for the closing of the facility.

The Summerville City Council will have a called meeting this evening at 6 PM. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the budget. A fourty-eight-year-old Summerville man was arrested last week in Floyd County after an investigation revealed that he had promised to build swimming pools for two different families, but failed to deliver on the promises.
A new law that takes affect July 1st in Georgia, expands the types of workers who can claim unemployment benefits. Governor Kemp signed what is known as “Act 809” that also deals with the nature of a worker to determine the existence of an employer-employee relationship.
Georgia gas prices decreased at the pump compared to a week ago. Georgia motorists are now paying an average price of $4.13 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline. Monday’s state average is 1 cent less than a week ago, 42 cents more than last month, and $1.22 more than this time last year.
Summerville Police were recently assisting Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies at a checkpoint inside the city limits of Summerville. Officers were concerned about a driver who pulled up at the checkpoint and appeared to be under the influence.
The University of Georgia will keep limiting alcoholic beverages at football games to those who pay pricey donations to certain club areas at UGA football games. Most fans won’t be able to order up a beer while watching the Dogs. The Athens Banner-Herald reported late last week that the decision to keep alcohol restrictions in place was made at UGA’s athletic board meeting last week at Lake Oconee. UGA basketball and baseball fans are able to order alcohol, but UGA says that there a “lot of logistics” to look at before they allow alcohol sales to the general public at UGA football games. Georgia is the 11th Southeastern Conference school to allow alcohol to be sold at sporting events.
