Memorial Day is more than an excuse for a three-day weekend. Originally known as “Decoration Day”, the idea to honor those who have given their lives in battle came following the American Civil War when Southern widows would decorate the graves of their fallen loved ones.


Despite the fact the City of Summerville budgets a $10,000 donation each year for the upkeep of Summerville Cemetery, their are many complaints from the community about the state of the cemetery. Complaints about limbs and debris and poor mowing are just some of the complaints that residents have voiced.

The Georgia Department of Driver Services said scammers are using text messages to try to get personal information. The DDS is warning drivers about the text message that falsely reports a license suspension or claims a license is at risk of being suspended. A department spokesperson said scammers are becoming more sophisticated.

The Trion Splash Pad is back open for the summer and the Trion Recreation Department is inviting the community to come and cool off in Trion. The splash pad is free of charge and located next to the Trion Recreation Center. According to the Trion Recreation Department, the hours of operation will be from 10 AM until 9 PM – 7 days per week. Parents are reminded that they are responsible for supervising their children. The splash pad reopened for the season on May 28th, in time for Memorial Day Weekend.
