TVA Conducting “Rolling Blackouts” Today

The Tennessee Valley Authority and some of the utilities it provides power to will be conducting rotating outages on Friday. North Georgia EMC is one of the TVA cooperatives that is participating in the rolling blackouts, and this will affect people with NGEMC power today in the WZQZ listening area.

Georgia Power Responds To Widespread Outages

Georgia Power teams are in the field this morning working to repair damage and restore power to customers following the extremely low temperatures and severe, high winds that brought down trees causing downed powerlines and interrupting service to customers overnight. Damage and outages are primarily concentrated in North Georgia and parts of Metro Atlanta. Power has already been restored to approximately 120,000 customers.

Friday Morning Power Outage

A large power outage is being reported this morning at Cloudland and several smaller power outages are being reported in Menlo, according to Georgia Power.  As of 6:15 AM, Georgia Power said that they were still assessing the situation and did not have an estimated restoration time.  Also, North Georgia EMC is reporting about 35 customers in the Haywood Valley area without power.  There is a wind advisory in affect until 10 PM with winds gusting up to 40 MPH, which means we could see more power outages from downed limbs and trees.  There is also a Wind Chill Warning in place until Saturday.

Summerville Mayor Vetoes Wrestling Donation

Summerville Mayor Harry Harvey vetoed a motion passed by the Summerville City Council to give $2,500 to the Summerville Youth Wrestling Program.  The mayor and the city attorney contend that the donation that has been given for many years is “illegal”, but city council members voted 4-1 to give the money to the program at their last meeting.

Woman Arrested For Stealing U.S. Mail In Big Texas Valley

A forty-six-year-old Floyd County woman was arrested at a location on Big Texas Valley Road by the Floyd County Police Department on Monday for stealing mail.
