Nineteen Die On Georgia Roadways During Labor Day Holiday Travel Period

Nineteen people were killed on Georgia roads over the three-day Labor Day weekend, nearly doubling the number of deaths from the 2019 holiday, authorities said.

On Tuesday, the Georgia State Patrol said 17 crashes over the weekend were fatal, resulting in the deaths of 19 people, including pedestrians, motorcyclists and bicyclists, news outlets reported. Last year, the agency said nine crashes were fatal, killing 10 people.

State Patrol said the deaths were reported between 6 p.m. Friday and 11:59 p.m. Monday.

The agency said troopers investigated 331 traffic crashes that resulted in 176 injuries and 13 deaths. The other fatalities were reported by Atlanta Police, Athens-Clarke County Police, Cobb County Police, College Park Police, Floyd County Police and Suwanee Police.

Authorities wrote 8,854 citations, issued 10,112 warning and arrested 309 motorists for driving under the influence. More than half of the citations were given for speeding.

The agency said they had prepared for a busy weekend. Great weather and an increase in people traveling by car during the pandemic, meant an increase in deaths, even in comparison to the Memorial Day and Fourth of July holiday weekends, the agency said.
