CHS Administration Proposes Flex Schedule Change

The administrative team at CHS is evaluating their FLEX time program to possibly enhance its effectiveness.  CHS has obtained outstanding student educational benefits with their innovative FLEX time schedule and believe that greater efficiencies can be obtained by making some basic adjustments.

Presently, FLEX time is on Wednesday afternoons from 2P.M.  to 3:40 P.M. The administrative team is considering breaking the 100 minute period into two shorter 40 minute periods.  The present Wednesday FLEX day schedule allows the students to officially meet with their teachers only three times a week. One of the major advantages to the proposed two 40 minute FLEX time schedule is that it would allow students to go to every class every day.  This allows the students to have face to face contact with their teachers every school day.     The administrative team is looking at many options, but believes that a 40 minute flex period held two days per week would serve the students better than the present 100 minute Wednesday FLEX day. This beneficial change would decrease the Wednesday FLEX time, but would increase the time students spend in the classroom per week.  The benefits of being in a classroom more minutes per week and meeting with their regular teacher four days per week instead of three days outweighs the loss of 20 minutes of FLEX time on Wednesday. Students and teachers have suggested that shorter, focused time frames are more productive than longer classes. The administrative team will evaluate the FLEX time alternatives and publish their findings in future Indian Lore publications.

CHS Receives $691,109 in Grant Funds

CHS students will soon have access to gadgets galore thanks to a generous grant. The Science Technology Engineering Math Grant (STEM) has recently been awarded to CHS and SMS in the amount of $691,109.00. This is a clearly massive amount of money that will serve as a catalyst to prepare students for 21st century learning. Receiving this money is a prestigious honor. The grant was awarded to only one school in each of the thirteen congressional districts in Georgia. Some of you readers may be thinking just what exactly is a STEM Grant? STEM is a two-year grant in which all money is awarded up-front. However, the money can only be used for hardware and software and training.

Science and Math students will reap the benefits of the grant by working through a realistic crime scene set up at Chattooga High. Students will put their forensic skills to work to investigate the scene and then analyze the data using skills learned in their math classes to determine what happened. The technology and engineering part of the grant is the greater part. The grant is funding a Mac Lab including Apple Mac computers, video conferencing between schools, Itouch podcasting, laptop carts, HD digital camera/video cameras, flip cameras, a robotics section, and each teacher working under the grant will receive a Mac Pro computer and Ipad. In the second year of the grant, there will be an extension to Menlo and Lyerly schools.

There are several people involved in making this grant possible.  On the committee are Rick Clifton (Chattooga Schools I.T. Coordinator), and Dr. Donna Herring (Institutional Technology Department at Jacksonville State University). The teachers involved with the grant at CHS are: Julie Lambert (Science), Liza Morgan and Renee Martin (Math), Kathy Daniel (Healthcare), and Eleanor Brown (Computer and Instructional Technology). “I think it is great for our kids to get to use technology in forms other than just computers. Through this experience, they will get to see real world science and math at work,” comments Eleanor Brown.

CTAE Department Holds Dinner to Highlight Accomplishments

On November 16th, 2010 a beautiful dinner was held at CHS f or the Career/Technology/Agriculture Education Advisory Department. The meeting began with a welcome from Mr. Jim Dean, the CHS vocational director. Next an invocation was given by Assistant Principal Jeff Martin. Mr. Martin introduced himself and gave information about the school’s vocational department. After this was said, food was served. Upon finishing a delicious meal cooked by the Chattooga Young Farmers, Mr. Dean introduced the CHS teachers in charge of their specific vocational areas. Each teacher had the chance to list the accomplishments of their department and thank their supporters and those who serve on their committees. After the advisors were finished speaking, Principal of Summerville Elementary, Mr. Brian Beasley, spoke a few words and introduced the guest speaker for the night, 2004 CHS graduate and 2009 Berry College graduate Mr. John Hall.

Many of you may be familiar with the name John Hall. In high school John was a very athletic and very popular young man. John related the events of an accident he had in high school that left him paralyzed. John told his story from the beginning when he was at gymnastics and dove head-first into something called a foam-pit and broke his neck until the present where he is a college graduate and has recently landed his first job.

John has had some very trying years. He has essentially had to re-teach himself how to do many of his normal daily activities. He stated that he has had bad times, when he felt useless and alone. He also revealed that he’s had worse times, when he felt like giving up completely. However, while in a recovery facility, he told of how his life outlook changed when he began going outside and playing sports again. He told how it wasn’t easy at first, but it began a turning point for him. John told how he had an epiphany. He knew that everyone was counting on him to come back from his accident and be the same John they knew and loved.

Today, six years since the accident, John has made great progress. He is a Berry College graduate with a degree in Government and is a former National Champion in Impromptu Sales. He has accomplished a lot since his accident. John is an inspiration to us all.

CHS Holds Fall Sports Banquet

The 2010 Fall Sports Banquet was held for football players and cheerleaders on Thursday, December 2nd at 7 pm. The cafeteria was decorated beautifully and there was a great turnout. Coach Liza Morgan presented awards first to the varsity football and competition cheerleaders. All athletes were given two certificates for participation in both competition cheerleading and football cheerleading.  DiAna Cooper and Meagan Hurley were both presented with the two Captains awards. Next the squad awards for Best Base, Best Flyer, and Best All-Around were given. DiAna Cooper was the recipient for Best Base, Kaitlyn Alexander for Best Flyer, and Katlan Bullard for Best All-Around. Coach Morgan also presented Coach’s Awards to Tessa Moore and Katie Johnson.

After the cheerleaders received their awards, head football coach Brad Waggoner began distributing the football awards. Like the cheerleaders, all football players received a certificate for participating in the 2010 football season. Bradley Black, Tyler Barr, Nathan Schuster, and Chris “Bubba” Wilson were all received Leadership Awards.

All coaches agreed that they enjoyed coaching this year and that they can’t wait until next season. We’re all excited to see what the football players and cheerleaders will bring to the table in the 2011-2012 school year. Congratulations athletes on a great season.
