In anticipation of heightened travel during the upcoming holiday season, the Georgia Department of Transportation has declared a temporary suspension of lane closures along Georgia interstates, major state routes, and roadways near major shopping centers, malls, or districts. The suspension will start at 5 a.m. Friday, December 22, 2023, and will extend through 10 p.m. Tuesday, December 26, 2023, for the Christmas weekend.
City of Summerville offices will be closed for the Christmas holiday on Monday, December 25, and Tuesday, December 26. Offices will reopen on Wednesday, December 27, 2023, at 8:00 a.m. In case of an emergency, please call 911.

A forty-two-year-old woman was arrested on outstanding warrants on Tuesday of this week in Summerville and during her arrest, officers found drugs in the woman’s possession. According to a report from the Summerville Police Department, Savanah Jestine Shockley was spotted by two officers who knew that she had outstanding warrants. When questioned by police, Shockley admitted to having a pipe that contained traces of methamphetamine. Shockley was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug related objects.
For most of the history of the county, Chattooga County local elections were dominated by the Democratic Party. That all changed when voters elected State Court Solicitor Sanford Buddy Hill to office in 2012. That was the same year that longtime Democratic State Representative Barbara Massey Reece was defeated by Republican Eddie Lumsden. The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) awarded a total of 18 projects in November 2023 including resurfacing, widening and reconstruction, and bridge construction.
The largest single investment, valued at approximately $42 million, is a resurfacing project covering 22 miles of Interstate 185/State Route (SR) 411 from south of Armour Road to north of Hopewell Church Road in Muscogee County. The second-largest resurfacing investment is worth approximately $14 million, includes the resurfacing of 8.5 miles of I-59/SR 406 from the SR 136 overpass bridge to I-24/SR 409 in Dade County. This contract, along with 10 additional resurfacing contracts, represents 70% of the total award amount.
