Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson has announced that Georgia’s November unemployment rate was 3.4 percent, unchanged from a revised 3.4 percent for the third consecutive month. The unemployment rate was three-tenths lower than the national unemployment rate.
Incumbent Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene is the presumptive Republican candidate for Georgia’s 14th Congressional District. No Republicans have stepped up to challenge Greene in the primary, but several Democrats – including a Chattooga County resident and a retired U.S. Army Brigadier General have announced their decisions to run as Democrats.

Summerville Police responded to a call about a man being attacked by four pit bulldogs on Ramey Street in Summerville shortly after 3 AM yesterday (Thursday) morning. Police went to the AtriumHealth Floyd Chattooga Emergency Department and spoke with the victim, identified as forty-seven-year-old David Tucker. Tucker told police he was walking along the street when the four dogs attacked him. Tucker had injuries where he had been bitten on both arms, one of his legs and his head. Police then went to Ramey Street and located the dogs and were able to get them into an abandoned residence and secure the door. Chattooga County Animal Control arrived on the scene and secured the scene and said that he would return with more help to get the animals. The report from the Summerville Police Department did not indicate who the owner of the animals is.
Chattooga County Commissioner Blake Elsberry is holding a budget hearing today. The hearing will be at 10 this morning at the conference room located inside the county commissioner’s office at 10102 Commerce Street in Summerville. The purpose of the hearing is for the county to review the proposed budget for the upcoming year (2024). Copies of the proposed budget are available for public inspection at the Chattooga County Courthouse, the Courthouse Annex and the Chattooga County Library. Only ten of the fifty states in the United States require runoff elections. Georgia is one of them. If a candidate fails to win a majority of the votes, a runoff election is held. In the other forty states in the Union, whoever gets the most votes wins. Georgia’s Secretary of State is urging the Georgia legislature to change the runoff system in 2024.
Former Summerville Fire Chief Robbie Lathem retired abruptly after the City of Summerville’s Christmas Party earlier this month. WZQZ News was alerted that there were issues that surrounded the retirement of Lathem and yesterday, the local newspaper reported that the Summerville City Manager had discovered a “non-city” bank account that was being used by the former volunteer fire chief.
On Thursday, Barry Hurley with Southeast First National Bank in Summerville announced that the bank is providing the former bank building at the corner of East Washington Street and Commerce Street to Chattooga County to use as a Community Development Center.
Two Rome men have been arrested on misdemeanor charges of hunting at night, hunting from a public roadway, and hunting from a vehicle.
