WZQZ News reported on Thursday of this past week that State Senator Colton Moore, who represents Chattooga and surrounding counties in Northwest Georgia, has been suspended by his Republican colleagues in the Georgia Senate. The suspension doesn’t affect Moore’s seat in the legislature, but it may affect how much legislation the twenty-nine-year-old senator is able to get passed in the upcoming legislative session.
A metro Atlanta pastor will lead the Georgia Baptist Education Commission, which provides scholarships to college students and monitors campus trends on behalf of the 1.4 million-member Georgia Baptist Convention.

Today, Georgia’s only native son to be elected to the Presidency turns 99-years-old. President Jimmy Carter is the oldest former President in the history of our nation. The Plains, Georgia native still lives in his hometown with his wife of 77-years, Rosalynn Carter.
This past week, T-Mobile announced twenty-five recipients of their Hometown Grants. The company gives out twenty-five of the grants each quarter of the year to organizations in small towns with populations of 50,000 or less, across the country. The local Boys & Girls Club is one of this quarter’s recipients.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month . Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) was launched nationwide in October 1987 as a way to connect and unite individuals and organizations working on domestic violence issues while raising awareness for those issues. Over the past 30+ years, much progress has been made to support domestic violence victims and survivors, to hold abusers accountable, and to create and update legislation to further those goals.
The City of Summerville held a ribbon cutting on Friday evening at the site of the new playground at Dowdy Park. At their June meeting, the Summerville City Council approved the purchase of new playground equipment for J.R. “Dick” Dowdy Park. The winning bid for the playground equipment went to Safe Play Solutions out of Canton, Georgia. The city paid $89,875 for the equipment. Installation of the new equipment began on the first week of September.
UDPATED SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 2023 AT 1 PM:
On Friday at 2 PM, the Georgia State Patrol was dispatched to an accident on Highway 27 at Scott Hill Road in the Gore area of Chattooga County. According to troopers, a 2006 Jeep Wrangler, driven by David Lopez of Rome, came across the grass median and into the northbound lanes of Highway 27 and struck a 2016 Hyundai Sante Fe, driving by Lori McWhorter. McWhorter was pronounced dead at the scene and Lopez was transported to a Rome hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. WZQZ News spoke with the Georgia State Patrol on Saturday afternoon, and confirmed the identity of the driver of the Jeep. We are still waiting on an updated accident report from the Georgia State Patrol public information office.
