A fifty-two-year-old Summerville woman has been indicted by a Chattooga County Grand Jury in connection with allegations that she stole from a dead man earlier this year. Lisa Sizemore was arrested after Summerville Police found a truck belonging to Russell Taylor stuck in the mud behind Taylor’s residence on Espy Street. Police say that Sizemore was doing some work, cleaning gutters, for Taylor at the time of his death. Police believe that Sizemore found Taylor deceased in his home and did not report his death, and instead stole his truck and belongings. She has been indicted on charges of burglary, auto theft and concealing the death of another. Since 1949, the Coosa Valley Fair in Rome has drawn attendees, exhibitors and agricultural students from across Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama. This is the 74th year for the Coosa Valley Fair and it gets underway tomorrow, Tuesday, October 3rd and runs through Saturday, October 7th.
A Floyd County woman was arrested at her East Second Avenue home Wednesday of last week on 18 counts of dog fighting.
Suspended Summerville Police Officer Josiah Hemm
A court hearing is set for today into a request by a Summerville Police Officer’s girlfriend for a protective order against the officer. The officer’s girlfriend says that Josiah Hemm attacked her during a domestic dispute last month. The woman filed a report with the Summerville Police Department, who turned the case over to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Summerville Police Chief Harold Tucker said that the GBI was investigating to avoid any conflict of interest. The officer’s girlfriend claims that he was controlling and she was attempting to leave him when he assaulted her. The woman says that Hemm bit her on the shoulder during the attack. Chief Tucker said that Hemm was suspended from the Summerville Police Department on September 11th.
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month is observed in October to raise awareness about breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Foundation’s campaign slogan this year is to “RISE” to ensure every woman has access to the screenings she needs and the support she deserves.
Former Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney and Judge Ralph VanPelt will be the featured speaker at the next meeting of the Chattooga County Historical Society. The meeting will be held this Sunday, October 8th at the historic Summerville Depot. VanPelt is a native of Chattooga County and a graduate of Berry College and the University of Georgia School of Law. He will be speaking about his career and notable events that took place in Chattooga County during that time. Sum Nelly is a festival celebrating the coming of Fall. It has been a local tradition for almost 40 years. You can find “Sum” people from all over the southeast and “Nelly” anything under the sun at Sum Nelly which will be held this Saturday, October 7th at Dowdy Park in Downtown Summerville. The park will be filled with arts, crafts and food vendors from all over the area. The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum Steam Passenger Train will be rolling into the historic Summerville Depot around 1 PM on Saturday as well. Admission is free. A tragic accident on Highway 27 in Rock Spring on August 31st has claimed the life of a third victim. The accident happened shortly after 9 AM near the intersection of Fields Drive and Highway 27 when a vehicle being driven by Trion resident, sixty-five-year-old Jerry Glenn Payne crossed the median and struck a vehicle driven by forty-one-year-old Tonya-Joan Marie Overbay of Summerville. Payne had suffered a heart-attack, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Payne was pronounced dead at the scene, and Overbay was taken to a Chattanooga hospital where she later passed away from her injuries. A passenger in Payne’s vehicle, nineteen-year-old Cameron Eli Lyons was seriously injured. Lyons succumbed to his injuries on Saturday. Funeral arrangements for Mr. Lyons are pending.
