According to reports, three people died in two fatal accidents in Northwest Georgia yesterday. The first fatal crash happened near the Gordon-Bartow County line on I-75. Two people died in an accident involving two commercial vehicles and a SUV. According to the Georgia State Patrol, the SUV was struck by a semi truck after pulling off the shoulder of the interstate. Both occupants of the SUV died as a result of the accident. The second fatal accident was in Floyd County on Highway 411 in Cave Spring when a pickup truck crashed head-on into a semi truck. The Floyd County Coroner pronounced the driver of the pickup truck dead at the scene of the accident. The identity of the fatalities in both accidents had not been released as of Friday morning. Both of the accidents remain under investigation.

Chattooga County continues to see an increase in COVID-19 cases. Earlier this month the numbers reported by the Georgia Department of Public Health began to climb from nearly none, to double digits. The latest report, released on Wednesday saw a dramatic increase in the number of cases in the county, compared to the rest of the state. The latest report shows 38 new COVID-19 cases in the county over the past week. That’s an average of 287 cases per 100,000, which is significantly higher than the statewide average of 51 cases per 100,000. There were 3,082 new cases and eight deaths reported statewide for the last reporting period that ended on Wednesday. None of the deaths were reported in Northwest Georgia.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson announced Thursday that Georgia’s July unemployment rate remained steady at 3.2 percent, unchanged from a revised 3.2 percent in June. The unemployment rate is also three-tenths lower than the national average.

Designated by the Georgia Department of Human Resources, the Northwest Georgia Area Agency on Aging coordinates programs and services designed to assist older Georgians in their desire to live in the community instead of a long-term facility. The Northwest Georgia Area Agency on Aging will hold its quarterly meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at the Northwest Georgia Regional Commission conference room, 1 Jackson Hill Drive, Rome. The meeting is public. The agency serves all Northwest Georgia counties, including Chattooga County.

Georgia State Senator Colton Moore has penned a letter to Governor Brian Kemp and Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger “demanding an emergency legislative session.”

A $10.3 million public-private partnership between Chattooga County and fiber provider Windstream will provide broadband access to 3,400 addresses in the county. This week, U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene praised the partnership, even though she voted against the funding that allows the project to happen.
