Reminder About Tax Office Closing

A reminder, the Chattooga County Tax Office will be closed this week while the tax commissioner and her employees attending training.  The Chattooga County Tax Office will be closed Tuesday, May 9 – Thursday, May 11, 2023 and will re-open on Friday, May 12th.  The tax commissioner’s office is normally open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 7:30 AM – 5:30 PM and is closed on Wednesdays.

Lady Indians BBQ Fundraiser This Saturday

The Chattooga Lady Indians softball team will have a BBQ fundraiser this coming Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Judy’s Herb Shop Parking Lot.  They will start selling BBQ at 10 AM until it is sold out.   A sack lunch is $8 and will consist of a pulled pork sandwich, chips, a Little Debbie cake and a drink. Sandwich only is $5.  Any orders of $25 or more can be delivered.  Call Coach Bennett for additional information at 706-346-5255.

Vendor Registration For Ducky Derby Ends Tomorrow

Summerville’s annual “Ducky Derby” is returning to Town Creek this weekend in downtown Summerville and Summerville Main Street is still accepting vendors for the event, but vendor registration ends tomorrow, Tuesday, May 9.  Anyone interested in being a vendor at the event can contact Susan Locklear with Summerville Main Street at slocklear@summervillega.org .

U.S. Forest Service Looking For Campground Host

The U.S. Forest Service is seeking a campground host for the Chattooga River Ranger District on the other side of the state near the South Carolina border.  The job is at Lake Russell which stretches between Georgia and South Carolina.  Campground hosts must provide their own camper or tent and be at the campground every weekend from Friday-Sunday.  The position runs from March – October of each year.  Interested?  You can call 706-754-6221.

CHS Golfer Headed To State

Chattooga High School golfer Walt Beach competed in area-wide play on Friday of this past week and came in with the sixth lowest score and is now headed to state.  Beach competed against fifty-one other high school students in the area-wide competition at Stonebridge Golf Course in Rome.  Beach is the son of Robert and Kristi Beach of Lyerly.  Congratulations and good luck in state competition to Walt Beach.

Trion Fire Department Releases April Report

The Trion Fire Department has released their report for the month of April.  The Trion Fire Department responded to four residential alarm fires, five commercial alarm fires, two illegal burns and assisted with seven motor vehicle accidents.  They also responded to sixteen medical assists, one report of a tree or power line down and one water rescue.  The Trion Fire Department also had one mutual aid assist last month.

Governor Signs $32.4 Billion State Budget

On Friday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed a $32.4 Billion budget for the Peach State.  The Fiscal 2024 budget for Georgia will provide $4,000-$6000 pay raises for law enforcement officers and an increase in pay of $2,000 per year for other state workers.  The budget also will fully fund the state’s QBE – or Quality Basic Education plan.  QBE is the student funding formula for students from kindergarten – 12th grade.  The QBE funding makes up $13.1 billion of the upcoming fiscal year budget.  Also, the budget will provide 100% tuition for Georgia’s HOPE scholarship.  It is the first budget in over a decade to fully fund Hope scholarships.  The budget takes affect July 1, 2023.
