Thief Flees After Homeowner Approaches Him

Summerville Police say that a man approached a would-be thief on his property earlier this month and the suspect fled the scene.  According to a report from the Summerville Police Department, the incident happened on April 13th when the complainant came home to his residence on Dowdy Drive and found a Chrysler PT Cruiser parked in his yard.  The driver of the vehicle admitted that he was there to steal, but claimed it was someone else’s idea for him to steal from the complainant.  The thief did make off with about $1,000 worth of items.  The incident was turned over to an investigator with the Summerville Police Department.

Lyerly Man Sentenced To Probation

A Lyerly man was sentenced in Chattooga County Superior Court to eight years of probation after he was found guilty of possession of methamphetamine and charges of forgery and theft by deception.  Michael Dewayne Tidmore will have to pay $1,800 in restitution to TJ’s Liquor Store in Lyerly and $1,250 in restitution to AUM in Summerville that owns the General Foodmart on Second Street.

Woman With Warrants Taken To Jail

Summerville Police responded to a call about a domestic incident on Northwest Congress Street on Thursday of this past week.  The complainant told a responding officer that her daughter, who had been staying at the residence, got into an argument with her and during the course of an altercation, the daughter bit the complainant on the arm and spilled a large amount of paint on the floor of the residence.  After the altercation, the daughter left the house walking down the street.  The complainant said that she did not want to press charges, but also told police that her daughter did have warrants out for her arrest.  Police located thirty-two-year-old Tamara Winn and arrested her on the outstanding warrants and booked her into the Chattooga County Jail.

Trion Spring Clean Starts Tomorrow

The annual “Spring Clean” in the Town of Trion starts tomorrow.  The town will be supplying a dumpster for area residents to clean up around their property and dispose of items.  The dumpsters will be available from April 24-April 30.  The town is encouraging all Trion residents to take advantage of the free dumpsters and take pride in the appearance of their property.  The dumpsters will be located at the old Trion School Supt. Office.

Fireworks Question Still Not Resolved

The City of Summerville’s annual fireworks display has been a question that the city council has been wrangling with.  The first question is when to shoot the fireworks.  Traditionally, the city chooses to shoot the fireworks on the weekend closest to the Fourth of July.  Last year, The Fourth was on a Monday, but this year it falls on a Tuesday.  One city councilman took to social media to ask people when they thought the fireworks should be held.  Overwhelmingly, people replied that they would like to see the fireworks display be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023.  The council also is having to come up with somewhere to purchase the fireworks this year, as the supplier they were using won’t be able to sell fireworks to the city this year.

Trion Looks For Bids For Splash Park

The Town of Trion is going to have to have the splash park resurfaced before it will be able to open for the summer.  Typically, the splash pad opening coincides with the end of the school year for students.  According to the Town of Trion, the splash pad has already been resurfaced twice before, but will need resurfacing again before it can be used this year. The Town of Trion says that they will try to get the resurfacing done and have the splash pad open “as soon as possible”.

Armuchee Woman Dies in Highway 27 Accident

An Armuchee woman died in a single-vehicle accident early Saturday morning.  According to Floyd County Police, Jennifer Whitley’s vehicle ran off of Highway 27 near Walenda Drive, just north of Armuchee High School  and flipped several times.  The vehicle came to rest in the nearby woods.  The thirty-year-old woman was pronounced dead shortly after 5 AM by the Floyd County Coroner.  Police say that the accident happened shortly after 3 AM on Saturday morning.
