A jury in Dade County found a Trenton man guilty for killing his own mother, but was also deemed to be mentally ill. Roger Allen Shrader was convicted on eight counts, including malice murder, felony murder and aggravated assault in the death of Lagatha “Cathy” Watson.

The Chattooga County Republican Party is hosting the 14th Congressional District Republican Convention today at Trion High School. The school is serving as the host site after being coordinated by Trion Mayor Lanny Thomas. Dr. Phil Williams with Trion City Schools told WZQZ News that the school has been preparing for the hundreds of 14th District Republicans that are expected to be in Trion for the event. The event is not open to the general public – registration is required for delegates and guests. Guests pay $10 and delegates pay $40 to attend. Registration begins at 9 AM. According to an announcement on 14th District GOP of Georgia social media, the “doors will close” at 10 AM for the convention.

Summerville police warned a Menlo woman that her aggressive driving could land her in jail if she is caught doing it again. According to a report from the Summerville Police Department that was released yesterday, on Friday of last week, a call came in about a vehicle chasing another vehicle inside the city limits. Officers spoke with both drivers at the Circle K on Commerce Street. Police say that Tommy Cooley told officers that he had been having domestic issues with Paulette Cooley and that she had chased him from Menlo. Mr. Cooley said that Paulette Cooley had cut wires on a video surveillance camera at his house in Menlo. An incident report from the sheriff’s office this week detailed Mr. Cooley’s complaints. Police warned Paulette Cooley that if she is caught driving in an aggressive manner again, she would be arrested.

AAA is issuing a warning for drivers to watch for potholes in Georgia. A new AAA survey found that the number of drivers who sustained vehicle damage from a pothole requiring a repair soared 57% from the previous year.

This week, the U.S. Department of Labor announced a settlement with the Prudential Insurance Company of America — a subsidiary of Prudential Financial Inc. — that will require the financial giant to revise its practices after a federal investigation found the Newark, New Jersey-based company collected life insurance premiums from participants for extended periods, but then denied numerous claims after the participants died, citing the participants’ failure to provide evidence of insurability when they applied for insurance.

U.S. Department of Labor investigators found the employer allowed 19 employees – 14- and 15-year-olds – to work outside of legally allowed hours, a violation of the child labor provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Specifically, the employer let the minors work during school hours, more than three hours on a school day and more than eight hours on a non-school day, more than 18 hours during a school week and before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m.

An upcoming rock concert at Chattooga High School was discussed at the Thursday night board meeting of the Chattooga County Board of Education, with one school board member expressing concern about the event.

A Floyd County man was jailed this week after someone accused him of contracting for hauling services and not paying. According to Floyd County Jail records, fifty-five-year-old Douglas Lynn Carney is accused of contracting with someone to haul a fiberglass swimming pool from Texas to his home on Old Dalton Road, and agreed to pay $7,894 for the services, and materials but failed to pay. The hauling company took out felony warrants against Carney for theft of services. Carney was arrested and booked into the Floyd County Jail on Wednesday.
