Enrollment In Georgia’s University System Continues To Decline

The University System of Georgia continues to see a decline in overall enrollment.  According to the university system, spring registration was down by 311,484 over last year.  The drop-off in enrollment follows a steady increase in the number of students over the past seven years.  The trend is nothing unique to Georgia.  According to researchers, enrollment in colleges and universities across the nation is falling off due to low unemployment, financial uncertainty and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.  While undergraduate enrollment has declined overall about 5% during the past five years, graduate student enrollment has risen by about 24%.

Debit Card Fraud Reported

A case of debit card fraud was reported to the Summerville Police Department on Wednesday of this week.  Jamilia McCuthins told a responding officer that someone had used her debit card at a Walmart in Kentucky.  The card was charged $851.50.  A report was filed and the complainant had the card canceled with her financial institution.

Unemployment Claims Drop Dramatically In Chattooga County

According to numbers released on Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor, first-time unemployment claims in Chattooga County dropped by 50% from February to March.  The numbers show 124 unemployment claims for March of 2023, which is down from by around half from February, but still higher than March of 2022.  Georgia’s March unemployment rate was 3.1%, unchanged from February. The unemployment rate has stayed at 3.1% for eight consecutive months.  County unemployment numbers will be released later this month by the Georgia Department of Labor.

Summerville Vet Announces Annual Clinic

The Summerville Veterinary Clinic has set the date for the annual rabies clinic.  The cost is $10 per pet and the clinic will be held at Chattooga High School on May 20th.  The rabies vaccinations will be given to the animals inside your vehicle, so you are asked to stay inside your vehicle with your pet.  Also, those attending the clinic should access the school via the entrance on Highway 100.  The rabies vaccination clinic will be from 9 AM – 5 PM.

Judges Recuse Themselves From Oxford’s Hearing

Last week, WZQZ News reported that a Summerville attorney was jailed after several outbursts in Chattooga County Superior Court.  Attorney Jim Oxford reportedly caused several disruptions in Judge Graham’s courtroom, and the judge ordered a drug test done on the attorney.
