City Of Summerville To Take Over Mowing At Cemetery

The Summerville City Council has decided to take over the mowing of the Summerville Cemetery.  Area residents have complained about conditions at the cemetery but the corporation that oversees it says there just isn’t enough money to provide the upkeep that the cemetery needs.  Earlier this year, Mayor Harry Harvey had said, “the city will probably take over the maintenance of the cemetery”.  According to Summerville City Councilman Joe Money, the city will start mowing and maintaining the cemetery on July 1st of this year.

Caleb Wells, known to friends and family as “Corey” hasn’t been in contact with his family in almost two years.  Wells was last seen on July 2, 2021 at the Atlanta Airport.

House Goes With Two-Tier Hope Scholarship

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp had proposed going back to the original HOPE scholarship, where all high school students with a B average or better would get the full HOPE funding.  Democrats in the Georgia House agreed with the governor, but a majority of Republicans voted for a two-tier system.

Basketball Fundraiser For AC Carter Scholarship Fund

There will be a 3-on-3 basketball fundraiser for the A.C. Carter Consolidated School Scholarship Fundraiser.  Entry fee is $25 for boys and $20 for girls.  Five-man roster is required.  For registration, call Preston Foster at 706-676-8552.  The fundraiser will be held March 17-18 at the Dewey Hoskins Gym.

Dump Trailers Stolen In Maryland Wind Up In Chattooga County

The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, with the help of a local resident, have recovered four dump trailers that were stolen in Maryland.  According to a report from the sheriff’s office, a Trion resident had purchased the four trailers online from someone in Maryland, paying $16,000 for all four trailers.  When they arrived via a transport company, the Trion man was concerned, because instead of being used trailers – all four trailers were brand new.  The Trion man contacted the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office and a responding investigator ran the serial numbers on the trailers.  All four came back as being stolen in Maryland.  The Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office is working with authorities in Maryland on the investigation.

Cartersville Man Arrested In 15-Year-Old Murder Investigation

The GBI and the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a Cartersville man in connection to a 15-year-old murder investigation.  On Sunday, March 5, 2023, Shannon Tapley, age 43, was arrested and charged with murder for the death of 20-year-old Lance Jay Banister, of Acworth, Georgia.

Lawmakers Approve $1 Billion In Tax Refunds

Lawmakers in Atlanta have passed two pieces of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s tax cut agenda.  The measures will allow for another $1 Billion in tax refunds to taxpayers and will waive tax collections on fuel for months.  This is the second year in a row that the legislature has approved income tax refunds.  Taxpayers will see refunds between $250 and $500, depending on their filing status.  Georgia ended last year with a $6.6 Billion surplus.
