Lawmakers Approve $1 Billion In Tax Refunds

Lawmakers in Atlanta have passed two pieces of Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s tax cut agenda.  The measures will allow for another $1 Billion in tax refunds to taxpayers and will waive tax collections on fuel for months.  This is the second year in a row that the legislature has approved income tax refunds.  Taxpayers will see refunds between $250 and $500, depending on their filing status.  Georgia ended last year with a $6.6 Billion surplus.

Rome Says “No” To “Small Bars”

The Rome City Commission voted down a proposal that would have changed the rules for serving alcohol and allowed smaller establishments the opportunity to serve alcohol.  According to a report from WRGA in Rome, city commissioners shot down a proposal that would have changed the food serving requirements and minimized the allowable square footage for establishments wanting to serve alcohol.  Commissioners in favor of the proposal say that the way Rome’s alcohol licenses are now, larger, chain restaurants get the opportunity to serve alcohol, while small, independently owned establishments have a harder time meeting the requirements.  The “small bar” proposal was defeated in a 4-3 vote by Rome City Commissioners earlier this week.
