Rome Man Arrested on Multiple Drug and Traffic Charges

A 25-year-old Rome man was arrested by Floyd County Police after being found unconscious behind the wheel of his vehicle, leading to a series of charges including trafficking fentanyl and attempting to elude police. Authorities identified the suspect as Mibzar Maquito Perez, who was discovered slumped over in his vehicle on North Elm Street at Verbana Avenue. Upon arrival, Rome police officers requested that Perez exit the vehicle; however, he instead took off, initiating a pursuit through several residential neighborhoods.

Dalton Academy fell to the Chattooga Indians with a final score of 53-7 at Chattooga High School on Tuesday evening. This defeat marks the Pumas’ 13th straight loss, extending their struggles from last season as they remain unable to find a winning rhythm. The Pumas find themselves ranked 521st in the state, while the Indians boast a much higher rank at 166th. The Chattooga Indians are riding high with nine victories in their last ten games, bringing their impressive season record to 15-2. Looking ahead, Chattooga will take on Fannin County, who comes into the match with a three-game winning streak, on Saturday.

A late-night shooting in Ider, Alabama in neighboring DeKalb County has left one woman injured and sparked a significant law enforcement response. At approximately 11:26 PM on January 14, DeKalb County Deputies, along with the Henagar and Ider Police Departments, were dispatched to Red Bud Drive following reports of a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound.

Northwest Georgia High School Football Coach Being Replaced

Jamie Abrams, the head football coach of the Cedartown Bulldogs, is no longer with the team after leading them to significant success over nearly five years. He was informed of his reassignment within the Polk School District and expressed surprise and frustration over the decision. Under Abrams, the Bulldogs achieved a record of 50-12, winning three region championships and becoming state runners-up in 2022. Although disappointed, he looks forward to his new role as a physical education teacher at Youngs Grove Elementary, where he hopes to maintain relationships with the community and youth players. The school is now seeking a new head coach to replace him.
