Northwest Georgia residents woke to temperatures in the low to mid-30’s but we will have warm temperatures and sunny skies today, with highs from the mid-60s, which is normal for this time of year. Light winds will shift south as a high-pressure system moves through. Relative humidity will drop to 25-30% this afternoon, creating a potential fire danger due to dry conditions. Fuel moisture levels were low yesterday and are expected to stay similar today. Officials are watching the situation closely, urging residents to be careful and avoid wildfire risks. Clear skies are expected tonight, with temperatures dropping to the mid-40s to lower 50s. Monday will also be mostly sunny, with highs reaching the mid-70s in the northeast mountains and lower to mid-80s elsewhere. Temperatures will be 5-10 degrees above normal. Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Georgia edged upwards last week, according to a report released Thursday by the U.S. Department of Labor. The data indicates a potential, though slight, shift in the state’s employment landscape. For the week ending April 5th, Georgia saw 4,858 new jobless claims filed, an increase of 432 from the previous week’s figure of 4,426. These new claims, often considered a proxy for layoffs, suggest a minor uptick in job losses across the state. Nationally, unemployment claims also saw a modest rise. The U.S. Department of Labor reported 223,000 claims were filed across the country last week, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week’s 219,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. While Georgia saw a slight increase, the national picture remains mixed. Tennessee experienced the most significant percentage surge in weekly claims, jumping a dramatic 95.3%. In contrast, Kentucky saw the largest decrease, with new claims plummeting by 56%. The fluctuating figures across states highlight the diverse economic realities currently impacting the nation.

The Port of Savannah has shattered its previous records, experiencing its busiest March on record by handling a staggering 534,000 twenty-foot equivalent container units (TEUs). The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announced the record-breaking figures, highlighting the sustained growth following a strong February where they moved 479,850 TEUs. The 534,000 TEU count marks the second monthly record in a row. The surge represents an increase of 98,000 TEUs compared to March 2022. Beyond overall container volume, the Port of Savannah also achieved a new high in intermodal cargo, processing a record 52,645 containers via rail. This reflects a 17% increase compared to the same period last year, demonstrating the port’s efficiency in handling and distributing goods across the country. The port’s continued growth is also having a significant impact on local economies. A recent study revealed that over 600 jobs in Chattooga County are directly linked to the activity flowing through Georgia’s ports, showcasing the vital role the Port of Savannah plays in driving economic prosperity throughout the state.
