A Chattooga County man was one of two individuals who lost their lives in a devastating traffic crash that occurred late Wednesday night.
For the first time in it’s over-three decade history, the Sunbelt Ag Expo has named a woman as “Farmer of the Year”. Faylene Whitaker, from Climax, North Carolina, is the 2024 winner of the Sunbelt Ag Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year Award. She and her late husband started their farm in 1975 with 10 acres of rented land and expanded over the years to 940 acres producing various crops. Their farm now includes an agritourism business. Faylene’s older son, Shane, is a major partner in the business, and other family members also work there.

Deer hunters in Chattooga County are joining forces this hunting season to help families in need by donating venison through the Hunters Ending Hunger initiative. In collaboration with Weesner’s Wild Game Processing, they have donated 65 pounds of venison so far, providing essential protein to struggling families. The initiative not only addresses food insecurity but also promotes a sense of community as hunters support their neighbors. This program allows hunters to give back and ensure that their harvest benefits those facing food challenges. Organizers hope to increase donations as the season progresses and encourage residents to spread the word. A high-pressure ridge over the eastern United States is bringing pleasant weather to Northwest Georgia and Northeast Alabama, with temperatures gradually warming and clear skies expected. While a Frost Advisory remains in effect for northeast Georgia, it is a few degrees warmer this (Friday) morning, compared to yesterday. Temperatures will rise into the upper 60s to near 70 degrees today with plenty of sunshine. The long-term forecast shows dry conditions continuing for our area, with a dry front moving through towards the end of the period. There is little moisture for significant weather changes, although a potential cold front at the end of the forecast period is expected to be dry. Temperatures will steadily warm up over the upcoming week, with highs in the mid to upper 70s progressing to the upper 70s and lower 80s by the middle of the week, before the next cold front moves in.
The Chattooga Indians will have the night off tonight with a bye week while the Trion Bulldogs will be in action at home against Greenville as we head into week 9 of the 2024 high school football season. Both Trion and Chattooga are in the final stretch of their respective region schedules with only two games left in the regular season and all games at this time of the year have huge playoff implications.
The 8th ranked Trion Bulldogs are 7-1 on the season overall with a 1-1 region 7-A record. The Dawgs are coming off a bye week and are currently tied for 3rd place in the region. The Bulldogs will welcome the Greenville Patriots to Sam R. McCain stadium. Trion and Greenville have only played each other two times in the school’s history back in 1980 and 1981 which were both quarterfinal playoff games. Greenville won in 1980 and Trion came away with the win in 1981. Greenville comes into tonight’s contest with a 3-2 overall record and a 1-0 region record. The Patriots have recorded wins over Calhoun County, Columbus and Mount Zion. Their two losses have come against Hardaway and Pike County. Trion and Greenville only have one common opponent in the Mount Zion Eagles. Trion defeated Mount Zion 44-0 while Greenville won a close game with Mount Zion 37-35. After tonight’s game, Trion will have another bye week next week before finishing the regular season two weeks from tonight on the road in a huge showdown with Bowdon.
The Chattooga Indians have a bye week this week and will start preparing for a road trip to Trenton next week to play the Dade County Wolverines in a critical game that could determine who gets the fourth and final playoff spot in Region 7-A Division 1. Chattooga is on a three game losing streak after losing to region foe Christian Heritage last week 49-14. The Indians currently sit at 4th place in the region with a 2-3 region record.
The Trion vs Greenville game will be live video streamed on the WZQZ Facebook page and will as broadcast live on the radio on 99.1 FM and AM 1180. Paul Cavin and Jeremy Burke will call the action from Trion along with Jim Warnock on the camera. The pregame show will begin around 7:15 pm with kickoff to follow at 7:30 pm.
A disagreement stemming from a child custody arrangement escalated into a physical altercation in the parking lot of Walmart earlier this month, resulting in the arrest of two individuals involved in the brawl.
