The Rotary Club of Selma, Alabama recently participated in the World Friendship Flag Project. Last Friday, leaders of the Selma Rotary Club met with World Friendship Flag Projects CEO and Chattooga County resident John Turner, to show solidarity for the global project.
A twenty-one-year-old Chattooga County man was involved in an accident that resulted in a fatality and multiple injuries in Taney County, Missouri.
Slow down or expect to get a speeding ticket. That is the message from state and local law enforcement officers in five southeastern states where “Operation Southern Slow Down” starts Monday. This is the eighth year for the week-long speed awareness and enforcement campaign that runs from July 15-21 in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and Tennessee.
The campaign will kick off Monday with news conferences involving highway safety leaders and law enforcement in all five states in Augusta, Columbus, Ringgold, Savannah, and Yulee, Florida. State and local law enforcement officers in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee will spend the rest of the week conducting concentrated enforcement on interstates and major highways in their respective states.

A new council member was sworn in at Monday’s Summerville City Council meeting and a local business that has been around for over eighty years in downtown Summerville was recognized.
Shawn Peek has been hired as the defensive coordinator and strength and conditioning coach at South Pittsburg High School in South Pittsburg, Tennessee. The school is located just a few miles across the Alabama-Tennessee state line. Peek is the former head Coach for Chattooga High School.
Traffic crashes across Georgia during the July Fourth holiday travel period resulted in 18 traffic deaths. The 102-hour holiday period began Wednesday, July 4, at 6 p.m., and ended Sunday, July 7, at 11:59 p.m.
The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is predicted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to be above average. The American Red Cross seeks volunteers to assist with hurricane relief efforts throughout the season, says Carla Maton, Executive Director of the Northwest Georgia chapter.
Summerville Police responded to a call about vandalism to a vehicle on Sunday. The complainant, identified as Andrea Jackson, told a responding officer that her vehicle had a spot of white spray paint on the passenger side door. A witness also said that he saw this event happen and tried to prevent the man from vandalizing the vehicle. The damage done to the vehicle is less than $500 dollars, but Jackson said she still wanted to press charges against a suspect that she identified to the responding officer.
Georgia gas prices increased slightly at the pumps compared to a week ago. Georgians are paying an average price of $3.32 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). AAA says that it costs drivers an average price of $49.80 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are now paying $1.20 more to fill up at the pump compared to a year ago.
