Two Chattooga County residents were among the 2024 graduates from the Gadsden State University Registered Nursing Program. Savannah Turner and Brittany Wallin both graduated and participated at the traditional pinning ceremony at Gadsden State. Additionally, Turner was awarded the Academic Achievement Award for above-average grades and performance.
Georgia Highlands College (GHC) has been named an Aspen Prize Semifinalist by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program. GHC is one of 20 colleges across the country eligible to compete for a $1 million prize recognizing excellence in equitable outcomes for students in and after college.
Georgia’s U.S. Senators Warnock and Ossoff announced more $80 million in federal funding would be coming to the state to support investments in housing. According to a release from the office of Sen. Rev. Raphael Warnock, the funds will be invested in Georgia public housing authorities and will go to 149 localities across the state, including the Menlo Housing Authority here in Chattooga County.
There’s Hope for the Hungry will be at the Central Avenue Baptist Church in Trion this week on Thursday, May 9 to give away free groceries. Come between the hours of 10:00 am and 1:00 pm to get your free groceries. No ID is required. But you must be present to receive the food. Also, the Central Avenue Community Clothes Closet the same day at the church from 10:00 until 12:30. The church is located at 14074 Highway 27 in Trion next to Michael’s Body Shop.

Kim Hatcher, Public Affairs Coordinator for Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites, encourages moms and fams to skip the brunch crowds and spend time together at a nearby state park such as James H. “Sloppy” Floyd in Summerville, Fort Mountain in Chatsworth, or Red Top Mountain on Lake Allatoona. Mothers who love history may enjoy checking out a state historic site such as the Chief Vann House in Chatsworth, says Hatcher, who adds that Annual Passes to Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites make great Mothers Day gifts.
Memorial Day weekend is also rapidly approaching. Most of the campsites for the ‘unofficial start to Summer’ have already been booked up for this year, although Hatcher recommends that would be campers visit the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites website at www.gastateparks.org to find out if there are any openings for the holiday weekend and even book for next year. And if a day trip to a state park is in your plans for that weekend, Hatcher says to arrive as early as you can.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Chattooga County woman last Thursday after they say she was harboring a wanted fugitive at a West Elm Street address.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed the Fiscal Year 2025 budget yesterday in Atlanta. The governor says that the State of Georgia is committing a total of $13.2 billion to education in the upcoming fiscal year.
The Trion Fire Department has issued their call report for the month of April. Firefighters responded to six residential fire alarms; seven commercial fire alarms; six illegal burns, six vehicle accidents and did eight medical assists. Firefighters also responded to three power line or tree down calls and seven natural gas leaks during April.
