There are several events planned at Sloppy Floyd State Park in Summerville coming up in the month of April. The Friends of Sloppy Floyd State Park invite the public to take advantage of the programs offered at our local state park.
Events include Kayaking 101 which will be held on April 6th. A “Turtle-Time Hike” taking place on April 13th and a Moon Pie Hike coming up on April 23rd.

A meeting of Chattooga County governmental departments will be held next week to give the public updates on current and upcoming projects and discuss events over the past month. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 26th from 10 AM until 11 AM at the Chattooga County Civic Center, located at 44 Highway 48 in Summerville. During these sessions, department heads from various sectors such as Public Works, Water District, Code Enforcement, EMA 911, and the Clerk’s office, along with the Commissioner. Each department will present comprehensive reports and expertly address any questions or concerns raised by members of the public. Chattooga County School Supt. Jared Hosmer says that a student at Chattooga High School was found with a gun in their possession on Friday. According to the superintendent, someone reported that the student had the firearm in their bookbag.
A Chattooga County man originally charged with causing a crash in Walker County that killed a Berry College student was found not guilty of second-degree vehicular homicide on Tuesday of this week. Twenty-year-old Eden Muina was killed in the crash that happened in 2021.

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that county has a new deputy at the sheriff’s office. Patrol Deputy Johnathan Reynolds graduated from the law enforcement academy on Friday after completing twelve weeks of training. Sheriff Schrader said, “He will now start his 8 week field training program where he will learn the policies, procedures and best practices which have been put in place at the Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Reynolds was presented with the class flag. The class flag is presented to the cadet that the staff chooses based on the cadets overall conduct and willingness to lead and help others”. Sheriff Schrader added that Deputy Reynolds is also a veteran having served in the US Army.
March is observed annually as Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross of Northwest Georgia is taking advantage of this opportunity to educate the public about the organization’s mission and how to get involved, according to Carla Maton, Executive Director.
The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) is urging parents to make sure their children are up to date with their measles vaccinations. Measles vaccination is important for all children to prevent measles infection and reduce the risk of community transmission, but it is especially important for families with children planning to travel outside of the United States.
