A Summerville man was arrested on March 4th after he was reported to be at a convenience store that had trespassed him from the property in the past.  Summerville Police responded to the Circle K on the Lyerly Highway after store employees reported that thirty-one-year-old Jerry Michael Luallen had been in the store.  Luallen had been banned from the store earlier due to “erratic behavior”, according to police.  When officers arrived at the store, Luallen had left, but they quickly apprehended him nearby on Highway 114.  Luallen was arrested and charged with criminal trespass and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

It will be time to turn those clocks ahead one hour this coming weekend.  The official time change will take place in the predawn hours of Sunday, March 10, 2024.

Republican Candidate for coroner Jeremy “Big Mac” McElhaney and incumbent Magistrate Judge Tracy Maddux qualify for office at the Chattooga County Courthouse

Qualifying ended today at noon for local offices in Chattooga County.  Several incumbent office holders will not have any opposition in the Republican Primary.  No Democrats qualified for any local offices, making it the first time since the Civil War that there have not been any Democrats on the ballot for local office in Chattooga County.

At the close of voting on Thursday evening, 1,141 Chattooga County voters had cast a ballot in person for the March 12, 2024 Presidential Preference Primary.  Today is the last day of Advance Voting for this election. Voters wishing to cast a ballot in person will need to do so either today, or on Election Day, March 12. Most voters complete the entire process, from checking in through casting a ballot, in less than 5 minutes. The Chattooga County Registrars Office will be open today from 8:30 AM until 5 PM.  Voters must show photo identification and are encouraged to have their IDs ready when they come to vote. Voters who were issued an absentee ballot still have until 7 PM on March 12 for their ballots to be received by the Registrars Office. No more absentee ballots are being issued at this time.

Georgia leads the nation in placing its citizens on probation, a distinction that is now being studied by the state’s criminal justice reform experts, a federal report shows. The state’s probation population at the end of last year was 471,067, according to newly released numbers from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics.
