The Cherokee County, Alabama Coroner’s Office has confirmed the identity of a body that was found late last month in Weiss Lake.

Former Georgia State School Superintendent John Barge has accepted a position at Unity Christian School in Rome. Barge will serve as the Head of School for Unity Christian, and will work with the outgoing school leader starting on March 15th. Barge served as Georgia’s state school superintendent from 2011 to 2015.
The Chattooga Chamber will hosting the Business of the Year Awards, presented by Atrium Health Floyd, coming up on Saturday March 23, 2024 at 6:30 PM. The event will take place at Sarah Jane Farms, located at 8177 Georgia Highway 337 in Summerville. Chamber member categories for business of the year include: industry, small business, non-profit and community service. The theme for the night will be an “adult prom”. In addition to the awards, the Chamber will also be hosting a silent auction to benefit the Leadership Chattooga Student Edition that allows twelve high school students to participate in the leadership program at no charge to the students or local schools. A thirty-two-year-old Summerville woman was arrested by Summerville Police on drug charges after a traffic stop near Economy Pharmacy on February 19th. According to a report released on Friday of last week, Amber Dawn Bryant was the passenger in the vehicle that was pulled over. While speaking to the driver of the vehicle, the officer noticed signs of impairment in Bryant and asked the driver for consent to search the vehicle. Inside, the officers found a pocketbook with suspected methamphetamine and drug-related objects. Bryant said that the pocketbook was in her possession, but she was returning it to someone else. Bryant was charged with possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug related objects and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.
The Georgia DOT says, weather permitting, crews will be repairing a railroad crossing on State Route 20, the Alabama Highway, in Rome. The railroad crossing is located between Westhaven Drive and Barker Road. A detour will be set up along the route. Motorist will be turning right on Horseleg Creek Road and taking US 411 before returning to the Alabama Highway. Work is expected to begin at 8 AM on Monday, March 4th. The crossing is expected to reopen later in the day.
A twenty-eight-year old South Carolina man was arrested in Georgia this past week after he and another were accused of planning to sneak drugs into a Northwest Georgia Prison.

On Thursday of this week, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signed the Amended Fiscal Year (AFY) 2024 budget in a ceremony at the State Capitol. The AFY24 budget includes critical investments for the wellbeing of the state, including an additional $102.5 million for K-12 classrooms, $1.5 billion for Georgia Department of Transportation Projects, $50 million to expand the rural workforce housing program, $100 million for rural economic development projects through the OneGeorgia Authority, $250 million within the Georgia Environmental Finance Authority for local water and sewer projects, over $591 million for facility and security improvements within the Department of Corrections, $5.9 million to upgrade the Georgia Public Safety Training Center, almost $70 million in additional funding for the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, a million dollars to expand the Veterans Mental Health Services Program, and much more.
