Chattooga County voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots for the 2024 Presidential Preference Primary today from 9 AM until 5 PM at the Chattooga County Registrars Office, located at 10017 Commerce Street in Summerville. Advance voting will continue next week, Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM until 5 PM. Be sure to bring a picture ID when you come to vote. Remember, all early voting takes place at the Registrars Office.
A man who killed his former girlfriend three decades ago is set to be put to death in March in what would be Georgia’s first execution in more than four years.
Over 300 anglers reeled in a Georgia Angler Award last year. The Angler Award program recognizes individuals who catch fish that meet or exceed a specific weight or length for that species, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division (WRD). Anglers submitting successful applications receive a frameable certificate, a t-shirt and a custom hat.

Chattooga County Tax Commissioner Joy Hampton says that her office was busy on Thursday and Friday as Chattooga County property owners came to pay their 2023 property taxes. Normally, those taxes would have been due in December of last year, but because of the large number of appeals, the due date was pushed forward to March 1, 2024. Hampton says that she will not be assessing any penalties or interest on the property tax bills for “a few days”, to allow time for mail to come in. Hampton encourages property owners to come in next week and get their 2023 property taxes paid if they received their tax bill in December or January. She says that property owners who still have property under appeal will not have to pay those tax bills until their appeal is settled by the Chattooga County Tax Assessors Office.
The Town of Trion is looking for a fulltime maintenance worker. Maintenance Superintendent Brandon Croy says that the salary will be based on experience. Primary duties will be working in solid waste on the garbage truck. Other duties will be assigned as time allows. The position requires the performance of heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time in a safe manner, the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather, the ability to operate miscellaneous equipment, and the ability to understand and follow detailed instructions. Applications may be picked up at the Trion Town Hall and will be accepted until Friday, March 15, 2024.
The City of Summerville is considering applying to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for a Community Development Block Grant of up to $1,000,000.00. These funds must be used to primarily benefit low- and moderate-income persons.
