Larry Russell “Meathead” Maddux, Sr., Obit (M)

Mr. Larry Russell “Meathead” Maddux, Sr., age 79, of Trion, GA, died Saturday, December 20, 2025, in Chattanooga, TN.

Larry was born August 15, 1946, in LaFayette, GA, son of the late J.C. and Olene Russell Maddux. He attended the Trion First Baptist Church, and prior to his retirement, was employed with Mount Vernon Mills. “Meathead” was a talented musician, teaching countless others how to play many instruments throughout his life. He was a member of the Trion Lodge # 160, F&AM.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Maddux was preceded in death by his brothers, Lynn Maddux and Mark Maddux; grandson, Austin Maddux; and a nephew, Jody Maddux.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Gerry Henderson Maddux; sons, Rusty Maddux and Derry (Amanda) Maddux; daughter, Keisha Maddux (Ben Latta); grandchildren, Russ Maddux, Olivia Maddux, Daven Maddux, Josie (Chandler) Pettyjohn, Lincoln Maddux (Kaylin Bishop), Toby Maddux, Maddux Colbert, Stetson Colbert, and Knox Latta; great-grandchildren, Kason Maddux, Hallee Pettyjohn, and Hazel Pettyjohn. He is also survived by special cousin, Bobbye Jo Davidson, many nieces and nephews, as well as an immeasurable amount of close, personal friends.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 27, 2025, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Casey Bramlett and Rev. Phil Minter officiating. Interment will follow in the Maddux Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Rusty Maddux, Derry Maddux, Lincoln Maddux, Toby Maddux, Maddux Colbert, Kason Maddux, and Ben Latta. Honorary pallbearers will be all Masonic brethren, Wilbur Rimes, Derry Martin, Ronnie Ray, Ronald Webb, Donald Webb, Jackie Thomas, Albert Palmour, Mark Schrader, Isaac McDonald, Michah Maddux, Wil Hyden, Larry Haney, Larry Stansell, and Scott Chase.

Mr. Maddux will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Friday, December 26, 2025.

Betty Ruth Abernathy Harrelson, age 84 of Centre passed away Friday, December 19, 2025 at her residence.

A funeral service will be held 1:00PM Saturday, December 27, 2025 at Lakeview Holiness Church with Gail Sharp, Bro. Mark Willingham and Bro. Randy Harrelson officiating. Burial will follow in Lyerly City Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11AM until the time of service Saturday at the church.

She is survived by her sons, Bobby Harrelson and Daniel Harrelson; daughters, Janice Woodall, Wanda Cross and Linda Acrey; 19 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; special friends, Gail Sharp and Maxine Fowler.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Harrelson; son, Tony Harrelson; daughters, Pamela Johnson and Betty Sue Anthony; brothers, Jimmy Abernathy, Johnny Abernathy and Leon Abernathy; sister Ruby Montain.

Ms. Harrelson was a lifelong resident of Alabama and was the daughter of the late Sevie Robert and Bertha Mae Abernathy. She was a member of Lakeview Congregational Holiness Church for over 60 years.

There will be a reception after the graveside committal service at Lakeview Congregational Holiness Church. If anybody would like to bring a dish to share, it would be greatly appreciated.

Mrs. Rose Marie Shelton, age 77 of Bakersfield, California, formerly of Trion, Georgia passed away Saturday, December 6, 2025 in Bakersfield, California.

Mrs. Shelton was born in Trion, Georgia on April 24, 1948, daughter of the late Ray Littleton Perkins, Jr. and Marie Dentmon Perkins. She was a retired nurse and had been living in Bakersfield for the last year.

Mrs. Shelton is survived by two sons, Bryan Shaw and Christopher Shelton; sister, Jeannie Perkins, niece, Valeri; seven grandchildren; and a number of additional extended family members and friends.

Funeral Service for Mrs. Shelton will be held Saturday, December 20, 2025 at 1:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with her son, Bryan officiating. Private Interment will be in the West Hill Cemetery.

Ms. Lynn Bartlett age 74 of the Teloga Community passed away Friday, December 12, 2025 at a local hospital.

Ms. Bartlett was born June 14, 1951 in Trion, GA to the late Henry & June Stowe Rider. She was retired from the Human Resources Department at Shaw Industries and most recently retired from the dietary department of Oakview Health and Rehabilitation Center. She enjoyed painting and watching cooking shows.

Along with her parents she is preceded in death by several siblings.

Survivors include her partner of 30 years, Brannon Brown; son, Stephen Dale Hood, II; and daughter Stephanie Hood Harris.

Mrs. Elsie Jean Gregory, age 86 of Lyerly, Georgia passed away Thursday, December 11, 2025 in a Chattanooga hospice facility.

Mrs. Gregory was born in Young Harris, Georgia on January 3, 1939, daughter of the late James Oliver Nichols and Ida Powell Ledford. She was an avid animal lover and enjoyed sewing, gardening and painting.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Gregory was preceded in death by brothers, Vic Nichols, Leroy Nichols, Paul Nichols, Carlton (Cark) Nichols and Dickson Nichols.

Mrs. Gregory is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patty and Randy Keith; brothers, Doug Nichols and Dan Nichols; grandchildren, Jack and Cathy Nelms and Casey Nelms; great grandchildren, Emma Nelms, Rylee Nelms and Jack Nelms; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mike was retired supervisor in the tufting department of Mohawk Mills and a member of South Summerville Baptist Church. Douglas Norton Spain, a loving husband, father and Papa, age 85, of Subligna, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2025. Doug, as he was known, was born on October 12th, 1940, in Trion, Georgia, to the late Jimmie and Gertrude Louise Norton Spain. Doug retired from Roper Corporation in 2002 after 30 years of service and was currently employed with Chattooga County Public Works. Doug had many interests including woodworking and was an avid fan of vintage cars. He was a former member of the North Georgia Cruisers and was also a founding member of Horizon Baptist Fellowship, where he would greet you with a warm smile and ensure that you did not forget your bulletin. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Virginia Spain Bullard; Phyllis Spain; and niece, Deborah Bullard Jennings.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Allene Jennings Spain; his children, Amelia Spain Blackmon, Carol Spain, Adam Spain, and Crystal Spain (Bud Raburn). Grandchildren: Blake Maney (Emily), Carrington Maney (Tyler Free), Piper Maney, and Zeke Spain; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Mrs. Nixon was born February 8, 1954, in Trion, GA, daughter of the late Orbarn Reed Goodridge and Frances Oneida Bailey Goodridge. She was Baptist by faith, and prior to her retirement, was employed in retail sales.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by sons, Stacy Nixon and David Lamar Mason; sister, Glenda Bennett; brother, Danny Goodridge; and daughter-in-law, Beth Nixon.

Mrs. Charlotte Hawkins, 80, of Athens, TN. passed away December 4, 2025 in Athens, TN. Charlotte was born in Menlo, GA in 1945 and spent her childhood in Summerville GA. She graduated from Rhinehart Junior College and earned another degree from Berry College. She had a long career as a Christian school educator and secretary, spending the majority of her career at Victory Baptist Academy in Shelbyville, TN. In 1999, Charlotte and her husband Michael moved to Athens, TN where Michael has pastored Cornerstone Bible Church. She will be remembered for her loving nature, her passion for her students and her dedication to our Lord Jesus Christ.

Charlotte was preceded in death by her mother, Alma Bullard, her sister, Barbara and her brother, Claude. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Michael Hawkins; children, Christi and Jonathan; sisters, Brenda and Geraldine; grandchildren, Kathryn, William, Melody and Sarah Elizabeth as well as many nieces and .
