Mrs. Vera Brown Hughes, Obit. (C)

Mrs. Vera Brown Hughes, age 89, of Trion, Georgia passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at the Oak View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

 

Mrs. Hughes was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 9, 1927, daughter of the late Clifford Brown and Etta Hartline Brown.  She was an avid Braves Fan and loved to fish, cook, play cards and spending time with her grandkids and great grandkids.  She was a member of the Spring Creek Baptist Church and prior to retirement was a machine operator in several of the local glove mills.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hughes was preceded in death by two sons, Ronnie Hughes and Larry Hughes; brothers, Wayne “Booger” Brown and Willard Brown; sister, Monk Bowman; an infant sister; step-son, David Hughes; and a step-grandson, Randy Hughes.

 

Mrs. Hughes is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Allen and Vicki Hughes; daughter, Andra Hughes; stepson and daughter-in-law, Micky and Joyce Hughes; three grandchildren, Jason Hughes, Justin Hughes and Amanda Bartlett; 9 great grandchildren; special friend, Betty Brinkley and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral Services for Mrs. Hughes will be held Friday, February 17, 2017 at 4:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Winston Renfroe, Mr. Phil McGuire and Mr. Michael Lee Stancil officiating.  Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.

 

Pallbearers will be Jason Hughes, Eddie Hughes, Jacob Hughes, Jerry Timmons, Josh Bennett and Jagger Hughes.  Honorary Pallbearers will be Barbara Hughes, Sharon Hughes, Megan Hughes, Amanda Bartlett, Vicki Hughes and all great grandchildren.

 

Mrs. Hughes will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends Friday afternoon from 1:00 P.M. until the funeral hour.

Mr. Jessie Thomas Howell, Jr Incomplete Obit (M)

Mr. Jessie Thomas Howell, Jr., age 61, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday, February 12, 2017, at his residence.

Mr. Howell was born March 11, 1955, in Clinton, NC, son of the late Jessie Thomas Howell, Sr. and Catherine Turner Howell.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed with the Harriet-Henderson Cotton Mill.

Mr. Howell is survived by his son, Jonathan Howell;  grandchildren, Evan Howell, Alexus Howell, and Tressi Howell; and a special friend, Phyllis Parish Elem.

Mr. Stephen Wayne Jones (Lane)

Stephen Wayne Jones, 66, of Summerville, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2016.

Mr. Jones was a native of Rossville, Georgia and was born May 7, 1950 to his parents Lelton E. and Opal M. Jones and has lived in the Summerville, Georgia area for the past 5 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving two tours in Vietnam from 1970 until 1972. He also received the Bronze Star, as well as, other accommodations during his military service. He was most recently employed with Case Construction and earlier with Tennessee American Water. Mr. Jones enjoyed hunting and fishing and will truly be missed by his family and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Lelton E. and Opal M. Jones, and his brother, Dana Lamar Jones.

Survivors include his sons, Stephen “Stoney” Jones, David (Amanda) Jones and Andrew Micah Jones, uncle, Clayton (Wanda) Mathews, aunt, Joyce J. Fields, 5 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and a nephew, Anthony Brian Jones.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30pm on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 in the South Crest Chapel with Reverend Ron Ragon officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4-8pm on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 and from 9am until the service hour on Wednesday at the South Crest Chapel of Lane Funeral Home and Crematory, at the end of historic Missionary Ridge, Rossville.

Mrs. Margaret Ellen Langford Obit (M)

 

 Mrs. Margaret Ellen Langford, age 80 of Summerville, GA passed away Saturday, February 11, 2017 at her residence.

Mrs. Langford was born March 5, 1936 in Rockwood, TN to the late James Reed, Sr. and Charity Roark Reed. She was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.   In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Clyde Langford, and siblings; William Reed, Thomas Reed, Charles Reed, Glenn Reed, James “Buddy” Reed, Mary “Baryl” Marshall, and Katherine Smith.

Mrs. Langford is survived by her sons; Ronald Langford and Rodney Langford, daughters; Kimberly (Charles) Westmoreland and Debra Conway, grandchildren; Lakeisha (Joshua) Swenford, Kristie (David) Love-Smith, Kassie (Dan) Love-Carter, Kara (Derrick) Shepard, Jennifer Westmoreland, Kallie Love, and Joshua (Suzy) Westmoreland, great-grandchildren; Leann Bridges, Brandon Swenford, Kaitlyn Swenford, Lydia Chandler, Brookelyn Williams, Ansley Westmoreland, Kyle Westmoreland, Ivan Westmoreland, Waverly Carter, and Addison Shepard, and sister-in-laws; Christine Reed, Lois Reed, and Eskridge Langford.

Funeral services for Mrs. Langford will be held at 1:00 PM Wednesday, February 15, 2017, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Sanford DeBerry officiating. Burial will be at 1:00 PM Thursday, at Liberty Baptist Cemetery, in Lawley, AL. Active pallbearers will be Joshua Westmoreland, Joshua Swenford, Ronnie Reed, Alvin Bryan, Larry Murdock, and Junior Beech. Honorary Pallbearers will be the staff of Amedisys Hospice.

MRS. BETTY W. DAWSON updated (ER)

MRS. BETTY W. DAWSON, age 85,of Gore-Subligna Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday evening at her residence.  She was born in Rome, Georgia on June 4, 1931 to the late John and Vivian Housch Choate .  She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, the late George Floyd Dawson on January 31, 2014.

        Surviving are daughter, Kay (Lawrence) Broome; granddaughter, Lauren Cady; grandson, John (Becky) Broome all of Summerville; great grandchildren, Clair Cady and Madilynn Broome; sister, Glenda Bullard; brother, John Henry Choate; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

        Funeral service will be held Monday, February 13th, at 2:00 P.M. from Graveside in Greenhills Memory Garden with Rev. Jimmy Bryant officiating.  Active Pallbearers, Gary Gordon, Mark Gordon, Terry Howell, and Joe Reed.  The Family will receive friends at the Funeral Home, Monday from noon until the hour of service.

 MRS. BETTY W. DAWSON, age 85,of Gore-Subligna Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Friday evening at her residence.  She was preceded in death by her husband, the late George Floyd Dawson on January 31, 2014.

Surviving are daughter, Kay (Lawrence) Broome; granddaughter, Lauren (C.J.) Cady; grandson, John (Becky) Broome all of Summerville; Great Grandchildren also survive.

Mr. Floyd Gurney Wells, Obit (M)

Mr. Floyd Gurney Wells, age 80, of Summerville, GA, died Thursday, February 9, 2017, at his residence.
Mr. Wells was born April 19, 1936, in Summerville, GA, son of the late Charles and Ollie Wells.  He attended Faith Temple Church, and prior to his retirement, was employed with Riegel.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Ann Kirby Wells.
Mr. Wells is survived by his son, Kim Daniel Wells; daughter, Donna Wells; sister, Betty Lewis; grandchildren, Charles Daniel Wells, Maggie Busby; great-grandchildren, Carrie Ann Wells, Charles Jack Wells.
Graveside and interment services for Mr. Wells will be held at 12:00 Noon Saturday, February 11, 2017, from the Summerville Cemetery with Rev. Billy Wright officiating.  Pallbearers will be Daniel Wells, Chucky Hartline, David Dickson, and Bo Lewis.
Mr. Wells will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service on Saturday.

Mrs. Ruth Milner Housch, Obit (C)

Mrs. Ruth Milner Housch, age 98 of Oneonta, Alabama, formerly of Summerville, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2017. 

 

Mrs. Housch was born in Zebulon, Georgia on May 27, 1918, daughter of the late John H. and Bessie Cannafax Milner.  She was a graduate of the Godron Military College, and was married in1941.  Mrs. Housch was a devoted homemaker and most beloved Mother, and resided in Georgia until 1999, when she moved to Alabama to be closer to her children.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Housch, was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Andrew Jackson Housch, Sr. in 1982 and eight brothers and sisters.

 

Mrs. Housch is survived by two children, a son, Jack Housch and his wife, Diane of Oneata, AL, and a daughter, Helen Housch of Huntsville, AL; 4 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.

 

Graveside and Interment services for Mrs. Housch will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 2:00 P.M. in the Pennville Cemetery with Rev. David Autry officiating.  Interment will follow in the family plot.

MR. A. L. NORTON, JR., age 86, of Norton Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Thursday, February 9, 2017, evening in a Rome hospital.  Native to Chattooga County, Georgia, Mr. Norton was born to the late Arthur Lee Norton, Sr. and Mattie Katherine Dodd Norton on June 10, 1930.  He was a member and Deacon of Four Mile Baptist Church, retired supervisor @ Georgia Rug Mill, and was preceded in death by his wife the late Mary A. Allen Norton, a daughter the late Mary Angelia Norton, sisters, the late Mozelle Edwards and Ava Mountain, and brothers the late Sidney Norton and Elgin Norton.

Surviving are daughters, Freida (Tommy) Dover, Teresa Scott, Melody (Mark) Sentell; sons, Grant (Ginger) Norton and Vic (Stephanie) Norton; grandchildren, Danny Scott, Jr., Tommy Dover, Jr., Jeff Dover, Alex Sentell, Mikaela Norton, Josie Norton, James Gilleland, Jessica Stricklin, Jennifer Gilleland; several Great Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 12th, at 2:00 P.M. from the Four Mile Baptist Church with Rev. Sanford Deberry, Rev. Joel Smith, Rev. Doyle Kelly, and Dr. Charles Bishop officiating, interment in Summerville Cemetery.  Active Pallbearers Tommy Dover, Jr., Jeff Dover, Alex Sentell, Jo Stricklin, Gary Norton, Phil Mountain, and Jeff Edwards; Honorary Pallbearers Jon Payne, Scott Norton, Johnny Edwards, and members of Four Mile Baptist Church.  The Family will receive friends Saturday from 6 until 8 P.M. from the Funeral Home.

Mrs. Laura Denise McPhail, Updated Obit (ER)

MRS. LAURA DENISE McPHAIL, age 59, of Orchard Hill Road, Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday evening, February 8, 2017, at her residence.  She was born in Summerville, Georgia on October 4, 1957, a daughter of the late Ralph Battles, and Hilda Berry Davis who survives. Mrs. McPhail was a member of North Summerville Baptist Church, retired from Roper Corporation and was Customer Service Representative of United Community Bank.

Survivors include Her husband, Terry McPhail; daughter & partner, Laura Bright & Nona and Lily Keen of Summerville; son, Matt McPhail of Summerville; mother, Hilda Berry Davis of Summerville; brothers & spouse, Mike Battles of Summerville & Mark and Brenda Battles of LaFayette; Nephew Chris Battles.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, February 11, 2017 at 1:00 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Pastor Tom Russell officiating, interment in Lyerly Cemetery. Active Pallbearers will be Danny Wooten, Steve McGill, Adam Latham, Ryan Wilson, B. J. Lindsey and Caleb Millican. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home Friday evening from 6:00 til 9:00 P.M.
