Mr. Red Donovan Hurtt Obit (M)

Mr. Red Donovan Hurtt, age 67, of Trion, GA, died Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Hurtt was born October 26, 1947, in LaFayette, GA, son of the late Oscar and Mabel Rogers Hurtt.  He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he served as a Corporal during the Vietnam War.  He was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.  Mr. Hurtt was a member of the Freedom Seekers Motorcycle Club, the Masons, and worked with the Boy Scouts of America.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, LaVonda Croy Hurtt.

Mr. Hurtt is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Tamberly Millican, Tina Gray, and Tonya Hurtt Gilbride and Michael Gilbride; a sister, Yvonne Horner; grandchildren, Lee Millican, Ali Millican, Lauren Hale, Amanda Gray, Hayley Gray, Sydney Gilbride, Emily Gilbride, and Chance Gilbride; great-grandchildren, Madalyn Hale, Wyatt Tucker, Paxton Donovan Gray, and Jack Donovan Gilbride.

Funeral services for Mr. Hurtt will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 29, 2015, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Big Daddy Greg Dean officiating.  Interment will follow in the Bryan Cemetery at 3:33 P.M.  Active pallbearers will be Butch, Breeze, Door, Gordon, SGT West, Poppa Ray, and Jim Becker.  Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Freedom Seekers Motorcycle Club.

Mr. Hurtt will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 11:33 A.M. until 1:33 P.M. Sunday, March 29, 2015.  He will also be in state at the Freedom Seekers Motorcycle Club Northwest Georgia Clubhouse from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M. Saturday, March 28, 2015.

Mr. Jerry Lee Grogan Obit (C)

Mr. Jerry Lee Grogan, age 56 of Trion, GA passed away March 26, 2015 at his residence. Mr. Grogan was born in Rome, GA on July 27, 1958. He had been employed by Potter Shackleford Construction Company. Mr. Grogan had a great sense of humor, was a jokester, loved to fish and do puzzles, word games, watch NASCAR and The Voice. He was Baptist by faith.

Mr. Grogan was preceded in death by grandparents, Leon and Datha Grogan and Hoyt and Pearlene Lewis; nephew, Richard Shawn Harris; and brother-in-law, Greg Carpenter.

Mr. Grogan is survived by his father, James C. Grogan; step-mother and step-father, Geneva and Tommy Purcell; brothers, Michael “Peanut” (Nancy) Grogan and Mark (Lori) Grogan; sisters, Faye Carpenter, Jean (Barry) Rollins, and Angela (Robert) Siffles; nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 29, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. in the Coffman Funeral Home-Petitt Chapel with Rev. Ricky Harris and Rev. Gary Wells officiating. Interment will follow in the AMI Cemetery.

Mr. Grogan will lie-in-state on Saturday, March 28, 2015 at the Coffman Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Colt Siffles, Eddie Timmons, Keith Davis, Ashton Broome, Tommy Maynard, and Paul Wofford. Honorary Pallbearers will be Barry Rollins and Robert Siffles.

Mr. Jerry L. Grogan, age 56, of Trion, Georgia passed away Thursday March 26, 2015 at his residence.

Mr. Fay Alexander Maxey Obit (M)

Mr. Fay Alexander Maxey, age 94, of Menlo, GA, passed away Saturday March 21, 2015 in Redmond Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Maxey was born August 4, 1920, in Summerville, GA, the son of the late Fay and Clara Alexander Maxey Knox.  He was retired having worked at Best Mfg,  Riegel Textile, and operating Maxey drug store in Menlo for many years.  He  was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Army.  Mr. Maxey was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Hardwick Maxey, step-father, John Knox, SR, sister, Rose Knox Wooten, brother, John S. Knox, JR, nice Margaret Knox Hammond.

Survivors include a niece, Janice Hutchins, nephew, John S. Knox, III, sister-in-law, Jo Trammell, special friends, Cindy Murray,  Janice Tucker, Anita Willingham, and several other nieces and nephews.

Graveside service will be held 2:00 p.m. Tuesday March 24, 2015, from the Greenhills Memory Gardens with Rev. Tommy Pledger officiating.  Active pallbearers, David Hall, Dempsey Lawson, Sid Swords, Pete Vaughn, Mark Goodson, Ben Sellers.  Honorary pallbearers, Chuck Powell, Paul Hosmer, Rex Evans.   Interment in Greenhills Memory Garden with  Full Military Honors provided by the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 Honor Guard.

Mrs. Wanda Wilson Barnett Obit (M)

Mrs. Wanda Wilson Barnett, age 71, of Summerville, GA,  passed away Saturday March 21, 2015,  in Floyd Medical Center.

Mrs. Barnett was born December 28, 1943, in Summerville, GA, the daughter of the late Ernest Franklin and Jannie Mae Scoggin Wilson.  She was retired teacher from the Mobile County Alabama School System, a member of the Subligna Baptist Church and preceded in death by a sister, Johnnie Shaw.

Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Barnett, grandchildren, Emma Kathrine Barnett, and Christopher David Barnett.

Memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday March 23, 2015, from the Subligna Baptist Church with Dr. Charles Bishop officiating.

In lieu of flowers memorial may be made to the Subligna Baptist Church Building Fund.

Ms. Brenda Joyce Ashworth, age 68, of Calhoun, GA died Wednesday, March
18, 2015.
 
Ms. Ashworth was born December 1, 1946 in Trion, GA, the daughter of the late
Charlie Smith and Viola Edwards Smith.  She was retired from Roper Corporation.
 
Mrs. Ashworth is survived by her children, Tammy Smith, Barry Ashworth,
Shane Ashworth, and Dewey Ashworth; and 7 Grandchildren .
 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Mason
Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Shane Ashworth, Billy Medley, Randy Justice, Jesse Smith, and Dewey Ashworth.

Mrs. Nellie Dooley Marks Obit (M)

Mrs. Nellie Dooley Marks, age 86, of Summerville, GA, died Thursday, March 19, 2015, at the Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
 
Mrs. Marks was born March 30, 1928, in Chattooga County, GA, daughter of the late Floyd and Lily Mae Whisenut Dooley.  She was a member of the Summerville First Presbyterian Church and was a retired librarian with the Summerville Elementary School. 
 
Mrs. Marks is survived by her husband of 68 years, Stuart Marks; a son, Will Marks; a sister, Louise Norton; and grandchildren, Ethan Hutchins, Tripp Marks, and Hannah Marks.
 
Funeral services for Mrs. Marks will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 21, 2015, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg King and Rev. Kenneth Norton officiating.  Interment will follow in the Summerville Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be nephews.

Mr. Joe Nathan McCutchins Obit (Willis)

MR. JOE NATHAN MCCUTCHINS – AGE 64, of Summerville, Georgia passed away Saturday, March 14, 2015. He was born on November 8, 1950 to the late Smith McCutchins and Lucille C. McCutchins Parker. His brother, Freddie Lee McCutchins and sister, Linda E. Wiggins preceded him in death.

Survivors are his loving family, four daughters, Crystal Harris of Haines City, Florida, Joelisa McCutchins, Jasmine Protor of Summerville, and Jeree Williams of Washington, D.C.; siblings, Viola (Louis) Ellis of Manor, Texas, Johnny (Porsha) McCutchins of Sidney, Ohio, Ella (Billy) Hill of Austin, Texas, Mae Frances (Terry) Morris of Sidney, Ohio, and Glenda Smith (Gene) Rounsaville of Summerville; sister-in-law, Penny Faye McCutchins of Summerville, Georgia; seven grandchildren; close friends, Jesse Adams and LaVett Walker; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

Mr. Joel Edwin “Jody” Cook Sr. Obit (M)

Mr. Joel Edwin “Jody” Cook, Sr., age 81, of Lyerly, GA, died Monday, March 16, 2015, at his residence.

 

Mr. Cook was born February 13, 1934, in Lyerly, GA, son of the late Roy F. and Addie Lou Henderson Cook.  He was a member of the Sardis Baptist Church and was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served in the Korean War.  He was retired from Mohawk and had worked with the Chattooga County Board of Education for 22 years.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jo Bankson Cook.

 

Mr. Cook is survived by his sons, Joel E. Cook, Jr. and Anthony E. Cook; a daughter, Margaret J. Cook; a sister, Mary D. Pickle; grandchildren, Shane Cook and Rosa Cook; and great-grandchildren, Steven Cook, Michael Cook, and Jacob Cook.
