Mr. Phillip Edward Smith Obit (M)

Mr. Phillip Edward Smith, age 74, of Centre, AL, died Monday, December 1, 2014, at Evergreen Health and Rehabilitation.

 

Mr. Smith was born May 14, 1940, in Esom Hill, GA, son of the late Calep and Maggie Prophet Smith.  He  was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church of Centre, AL and also served as a Baptist Evangelist.  Prior to his retirement, he was employed with the Polk County Maintenance Department.  Mr. Smith was also a veteran of the U.S. Air Force.

 

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Patricia Ann Smith; daughters, Fran Buchanan and Christy James; a niece, Beth Allen; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great-grandchildren.

 

Funeral services for Mr. Smith will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, December 4, 2014, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Marshall Bryan officiating.  Interment will follow in the Lyerly Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Mark Brady, Sammy Smith, Tommy Smith, Nathan Allen, Jordan Buchanan, and Sage Buchanan.

 

Mr. Smith will lie in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 12:30 P.M. until the hour of service on Thursday.

Mr. Ralph Harlan (Toby) Brock Obit

Mr Ralph Harlan (Toby) Brock of Trion passed away on 1st  Dec . He was married to the late Alma

Jean Brock.  He is survived by Daughter Rita D Parker, Yelm, WA; Son Ralph H.

Brock Jr., Lyerly, daughter Gwenneta Jean Brock, Teloga, and son Jeffery Ladon

Brock, Lyerly.  Mr Brock had five grand children and 9 great-grandchildren.  

He retired from the maintenance department at Mt Vernon Mills,  

there will be a celebration of life ceremony at the Berryton Church

of God on Sunday, Dec 7th from 2 to 4PM with the Reverend Bill Cox

 conducting a small ceremony at 4PM. The family respectfully

request donations to the Alzheimer's  foundation in lieu of flowers.

Mr. Harold Lee Battles, Sr. obit (ER)

MR. HAROLD LEE BATTLES, SR., age 84, of Lyerly, Georgia, Holland Community, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014, at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Chattooga County, He was born to the late M.D. and Grace Huckabee Battles on December 25, 1929. Mr. Battles was retired from Inland Container lime kill department, after 36 years service. He was preceded in death by his wife the late Elizabeth Joyce Crabtree Battles, on September 29, 1997 and a Son the late Harold Lee Battles, Jr. in 2012.

Surviving are daughter-Sandra Vaughn of Fort Payne, Alabama; sons-Dennis Lamar Battles of Haveway, Missouri and James Michael Battles of Lyerly; numerous Grandchildren, Great Grandchildren, Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Funeral service will be held Tuesday, December 2nd, at 1:00 P.M. from Graveside in New Hope South Cemetery, with Rev. Frank McCrickard officiating, Pallbearers will be Grandsons. The Family request no food.

Mr. Charles Edward “Eddie” Colbert Obit (M)

Mr. Charles Edward “Eddie” Colbert, age 56, of Summerville, GA, died suddenly on Sunday, November 30, 2014, at Redmond Regional Medical Center. 

Mr. Colbert was born February 22, 1958, the son of Charles Edward “Buddy” Colbert, SR. and Nena Alva Martin Colbert. He attended Dry Valley Baptist Church. He was formerly employed with Summerville Police Department and Dade County Sheriff’s Department.  He was currently the chief investigator of Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department.  He was a veteran of the United States Air Force.  Mr. Colbert was preceded in death by a sister, Tina Colbert.  

Survivors include his wife, Melissa Seymore Colbert, Summerville, GA; parents, Charles “Buddy” and Nena Martin Colbert, Summerville, GA; children, Doug Colbert, Summerville, GA, Jeremy and Olga Willingham, El Paso, TX, Casey and David Daniel, Calhoun, GA, Amanda and Chris Watson, Cartersville, GA, and Jana and Jamie Allen; Calhoun, GA; sister, Kathy and Terry Day, Menlo, GA; 10 Grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Wednesday, December 3, 2014 at Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alton Stamey and Rev. Kevin Woods officiating.  Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens.  Active pallbearers will be John Phillip Robinson, Levi Robinson, Joe Reed, B. J. Montgomery, Harold Tucker, Eddie Stroup, Wes Maddux, and Jeff Maddux.  Honorary pallbearers will be all employees of the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Department, the Summerville Police Department, Trion Police Department, and Chattooga County 911.

Mr. Robert Bryan Evans Obit (C)

Mr. Robert Bryan Evans, age 94 of Summerville, passed away Sunday, November 30, 2014 at the Oak View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Mr. Evans was born in Hamilton County, Alabama on April 5, 1920, son of the late Ervin Frank Evans and Dolpha Homer Evans. He was a charter member of the Emmanuel Baptist Tabernacle, now New Haven Baptist Church, and was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Evans was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed yard work, working with his fruit trees and working in his gardens. Mr. Evans was preceded in death by in infant son, Edward Evans; and siblings, Lee Evans, Olene Duke, Flora Mae Hammond, Nellie Grider, Ellen Lacy and Brice Evans.

Mr. Evans is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Pat Evans; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mr. Evans will be held Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. in the Petitt Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Todd Threlkeld and Rev. Tim Evans officiating. Interment will follow in the Green Hills Memory Gardens with the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 of the American Legion Honor Guard in charge of Graveside Military Honors.

Mrs. Frances Lucille Hood Obit (M)

Mrs. Frances Lucille Hood, age 100, of Summerville, GA, died Friday, November 28, 2014, at Pruitt Healthcare of Rome.
 
Mrs. Hood was born February 17, 1914, in Summerville, GA, daughter of the late Joshua “Buey” and Pauline Thurman McConnell.  She was a homemaker and a member of the Teloga Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher for 30 years.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hood was preceded in death by her, husband Ray Hood, brother, J. D. McConnell; sister, Sarah Cohen; and a grandson, Ronnie Payton.
 
Mrs. Hood is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, James M. “Jimmy” and Carol Hood, Bobby Joe and Jackie Hood, Steven Dale and Mary Hood; daughters and son-in-law, Doris Ray Smith, Mary Mac Payton, Carolyn Elizabeth and Ron Thomas; grandchildren, Gary and Janet Payton, Karen and Phil Garrett, Angie Tanner, B. J. Hood, Marcia and Will Thompson, Chip and Beth Hood, Britt and LeeAnn Canada, Dale Hood, Stephanie and Brian Harris, Stephen Hood; 20 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
 
Funeral services for Mrs. Hood will be held Sunday, Nov. 30, at 3:00 P.M. from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. David Hunter officiating.  Interment will follow in the Macedonia Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be grandsons.  Honorary pallbearers will be Members of Teloga Baptist Church.

Mr. Morris Charles Wagoner, age 70, of Trion, GA, died Monday, November 24, 2014, at his residence.
 
Mr. Wagoner was born December 1, 1943, in Scranton, PA, son of the late Ernest Morris Wagoner and Dorothy Rainer Wagoner.  He was retired from AT&T and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and attended the Ridgedale Baptist Church of Chattanooga, TN.
 
Mr. Wagoner is survived by his wife, Shirley Ann McGinnis Wagoner, daughter, Cynthia Marie Hubbard, sons and daughters-in-law, Alan & Donna Miller, Mike & Jennifer Miller, James & Cheri Starkely, Stephen Michael Starkely, sister, Lillian Wagoner Hewitt, 7 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 nephews.
 
Funeral services for Mr. Wagoner will be held at 4:00 P.M. Saturday, November 29, 2014, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Doug Plumlee and Dr. Larry Williams officiating.  Following the service military rites will be conducted by  the Shanklin-Attaway Post 5 Honor Guard.

Mrs. Annette Clarice Nicholson, age 65, of Summerville, GA, died Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Nicholson was born March 17, 1949, in Hahira, GA, daughter of the late William Harvey and Winnie Clarice Scoggins Caldwell.  She was a homemaker.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her second husband, Larry E. Choate; third husband, Emory Nicholson; a daughter, Joanna Hope Brown; and a brother, Larry Caldwell.

Mrs. Nicholson is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Alex and Lisa Brown; daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Richard Smith; brothers, Billy Caldwell and Jimmy Caldwell; a sister, Lynn Cagle; grandchildren, Sherri Brown, Nicholas Smith, Tabitha Brown, and Samantha Brown; great-grandchildren, Sydney Brown, Caleb Brown, Ethan Brown, and Presley Brown.
