Mrs. Deborah Sue DJ Jones Obit (M)

Mrs. Deborah Sue “D. J.” Jones, age 57, of Menlo, GA passed away Thursday, October
20, 2011 at her residence.
Mrs. Jones was born November 13, 1953 in LaFayette, GA , the daughter of Esto
Virginia Ellison Young. She was retired from Shaw Industries. Mrs. Jones was
preceded in death by her infant son, Michael Allen Bowman; father, Jason L. Young; grandparents, Augustus & Beulah Ellison, Jessie & Blanche Young; and a sister-in-law;
Beth Young. Mrs. Jones was a devoted pet lover and bird watcher. She loved reading
and gardening.
Survivors include her lifelong companion, Jerry David Holbrook, Menlo, GA;
mother, Esto Young, LaFayette, GA; children, Pati Ware and Jeffrey Hughes, Lyerly,
GA, Hope and Don Oliver, LaFayette, GA, Kenneth David Holbrook, and Tammy
Lynn Barnes; brothers and wives, Randy and Judy Young, Tony and Tammy Young,
Mark and Gloria Young, all of LaFayette, GA; grandchildren, Amber Rhinehart,
Joseph Ware, Elizabeth Shrubb, James Michael Wilson and 5 additional Grandchildren;
great-grandchildren, Payton Ware and Addison Ware; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p. m. Saturday, October 22, 2011 at Mason Funeral
Home with Rev. Melvin Bridges officiating. Burial will follow in Chattooga Baptist
Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Mark Young, Joseph Ware, Jeff Hughes,
Brandon Rinehart, Fred Lawson, and Eddie Kennedy. Honorary pallbearers will be
Rance Harrell, Richard Harrell, Ricky Harrell, and Steve Dupree.
Mrs. Jones will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive

Mrs. Pearl Sybil Wesson Obit (E)

Mrs. Pearl Syble Wesson, age 92 of Harrisburg Road, Summerville, GA passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2011 in Oakview Nursing and Rehab Center.  Mrs. Wesson was born October 3, 1919 in Chattooga County, GA.  She was retired from Best Manufacturing and was a member of the New Bethel Baptist Church
   Mrs. Wesson was preceded in death by husband, Robert Wesson; father and mother, William "Bill" and Rosa Crump Durham; brother, Mark Durham; and sisters, Lucy Brown, Thelma  Chastain, Daisy Ramey, Edna Hogue, and Lillian Burke.
   Survivors include daughter, Sue Edwards of Summerville, GA; son and daughters-in-law, Gene and Brenda Wesson, James and Sue Wesson, and Larry and Brenda Wesson all of Summerville, GA. 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great grandchildren.
   Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, October 20, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home with Rev.Terry Shores, Rev. Jason Cowart, and Rev. Tom Rogers officiating.  Interment will be in the
West Hill Cemetery.
   Mrs. Wesson will lie-in-state on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m.
   Pallbearers will be grandsons.  Honorary Pallbearers will be the Staff of Oakview Nursing and
Rehab Center.

Preacher Jim Cordell Obit (Wallis Wilbanks)

Preacher Jim Cordell 69 of LaFayette passed away after a short battle with cancer on Monday October 17th…He was a faithful servant of the Lord for 40 years …He pastored at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Trion First Baptist, Ruhama Baptist and Walnut Grove Baptist, he was  an Alumni of Shorter College, on the board of trustees for the Baptist Village and the Georgia Baptist Children Homes…Jim loved being with his family and grandchildren, dealing with antiques and working with For Evergreen Landscaping in Rome…He was preceded in death by his parents Shamblin Franklin,  and Lecile Mae Williams Cordell and brother Leonard Cordell….He is survived by his wife of 50 years , Wanda Dycus Cordell, Daughters and son in laws Pam and Barry Bridges of Summerville, Beth and Chip Hood of Rome, a son and daughter in law Chris and Amber Cordell of Cramerton, NC, sister and brother in law Shirley and Dan Deakins of Whitwell, TN. Mrs. Edna Josephine Sewell Obit(M)

Mrs. Edna Josephine Sewell, age 78, of Summerville, GA, died Sunday October 16, 2011 in Oakview Nursing and Rehab Center. Mrs. Sewell was born March 10, 1933, in Trion Georgia the daughter of the late Lovett Johnson and Surlina Shrophire Johnson. She was retired from Fortune Mills, and was a member of the St. Thomas Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Edward Eugene Sewell, brother, Rufus Johnson, sisters, Mary Brice, Helen Wooten, Hazel Price and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday October 21, 2011 from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Undra Finley officiating with interment in the AMI Cemetery. Mrs. Sewell will be in state at the Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Friday October 21, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. until the service hour.

Mr. George Henry Horton Obit (M)

Mr. George Henry Horton, age 85, of Summerville, GA died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at his residence.

Mr. Horton was born June 8, 1926 in Portersville, AL, the son of the late Jess and Bertha Grubbs Horton. He retired from Mt. Vernon Mills in 1988. Mr. Horton was a veteran of the United States Army, having served in WWII. He was a member of the F & AM Dekalb Lodge #116 in Lebanon, AL. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Dottie Bryson; sisters, Mary Stone and Miriam Barnes; brothers, Jack Horton and Ray Horton; and 2 Grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Drucilla Horton; sons and wives, George Horton, JR, Charles and Diane Bryson, Sidney and Sheilah Bryson, William and Connie Bryson; daughter and husband, Brenda and Tim Rutledge; 11 Grandchildren; 19 Great Grandchildren; and 3 Great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p. m. Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Mason Funeral Home with Wesley Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in Ami Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons, Randy Bryson, Chris Bryson, Shawn Bryson, Freddy Bryson, Ryan Bryson, Timothy Rutledge, Charlie Rutledge, and Jerry Rutledge.

Mrs. Hermanieta “Jackie” Gardner Obit (M)

Mrs. Hermanieta “ Jackie” Gardner, age 89, of Summerville, GA died Sunday, October 16, 2011 at her residence.

Mrs. Gardner was born September 22, 1922 in Lookout Mtn, GA, the daughter of the late Houston and Myrtle Lecroy Hollingsworth. She was a homemaker and a member of the American Legion, Post 129, Ladies Auxiliary, and VFW Post 6688 Ladies Auxiliary. Mrs. Gardner was preceded in death by her husband, Reno Gardner.

Survivors include step-children, Jean Jones and Jeanette Bomi; sisters, Christine Forester and Lois Guffy; nephews, Howard Barnes, Harry Barnes, and Darrell Barnes; niece, Karen Veal; special friends, Jim and Judy Palmour; several nieces and nephews.

Graveside and interment services will be held at 4:00 p. m. Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Oak Hill Cemetery with Rev. Jimmy Wilborn officiating. Active pallbearers will be Howard Leon Barnes, Darrell Barnes, Scott Barnes, Howard Lewis Barnes, James Bowman, and Brent Barnes. Honorary pallbearers will be all members of the VFW Post 6688 Ladies Auxiliary.

Miss Caressa Darlette Gill Obit (E)

Miss Caressa Darlette Gill age 28, of Long Hollow Road, Trion, GA passed away Saturday, October 15, 2011 in Emory Orthopedic and Spine Hospital.  Miss Gill was born December 20, 1982 in Rome, GA.  She was a member of the Trion Church of God of Prophecy.  

Miss Gill was preceded in death by a nephew, Carter Allen Gill and grandfathers, Charles Jefferson Sweet and J. D. Gill.

Miss Gill is survived by her father and mother, Jason "Doug" and Vicky Sweet Gill of Trion, GA; brothers and sister-in-law, Jesse and Nicole Gill of Cummin, GA and Adam Gill of Trion, GA; grandmother, Georgia Ann Sweet of Trion, GA; grandmother and step-grandfather, Helen Gill Williams and Kenneth Williams of Trion, Ga; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the funeral home chapel with Rev. Phil Minter officiating.  Interment will follow in West Hill Cemetery. 

Miss Gill will lie-in-state Monday, October 17, 2011 at the Erwin-Petitt Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.  

Pallbearers will be Tony Ingle, Jeff Ford, Matt Ingle, Daniel Ford, Richard Forrester, and Marty Gill.  Honorary Pallbearers will be the members of the Trion Church of God of Prophecy and the "spend the night buddies, all the Ford  girls."
     

 

Mr. Romie Bowman obit (M)

Mr. Romie Bowman, age 83, of Menlo, GA, died Friday, October 14, 2011 at Floyd
Medical Center.
Mr. Bowman was born January 5, 1928 in Centre, AL, son of the late John Jackson
and Fannie Frances Stansell Bowman. He was a member and Ruling Elder of the
Menlo Presbyterian Church and served on the Board of Trustees for Alpine Cemetery.
Mr. Bowman was retired from Riegel where he worked in the Maintenance
Department. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Onell Bowman.
Mr. Bowman is survived by his stepson, Allen Pickle; sisters, Ethel Bowman and
Joyce Plunkett; several nieces and nephews; and several great nieces and great
nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2011 in the
Menlo Presbyterian Church with Minister Thomas Broome officiating. Burial will
follow in West Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Yogi Hegwood, Henry Covington,
Dewayne Chamlee, Greg Plunkett, Scott Treadaway, and Jeff Phillips. Honorary
Pallbearers will be Madge Fox, Lan and Jan Cordell, Ronald and Carol Hill, Jerry
and Kay Hamby, and Members of Menlo Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Bowman will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive
friends Sunday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. He will also lie in state at the
church from 1:30 p.m. until the service hour on Monday.

Mr. Kenneth Whitfield obit (E)

 Mr. Kenneth Whitfield, age 70 of Cedar Glen Circle, Chattanooga, TN, passed away Thursday, October 13, 2011 in the Hospice of Chattanooga.  He was born in Trion, GA on July 13, 1941.  Mr. Whitfield was a member of the Trion United Methodist Church.  He was a graduate of Trion High School Class of 1957 and also played on the 1957 Trion High School State Champion Football Team, graduated from Shorter College, and enjoyed being a Civil War Re-enactor.  He was retired from Roadway Express.
   Mr. Whitfield was preceded in death by a son, Hugh Whitfield; and father and mother, Corbin and Marjorie Whitfield.
   Mr. Whitfield is survived by his wife, Brenda Brimer Whitfield of Chattanooga, TN; sons and daughter-in-law, Clay and Heather Whitfield of Soddy Daisy, TN and Ben Whitfield of Chattanooga, TN; and daughter, Melody Whitfield of  Ringgold, GA.  He was a loving grandfather to Rebekah, Hannah, and Faith; brother, Jimmy Whitfield; and a niece,
   Memorial services will be held Sunday, October 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. from the graveside of the West Hill Cemetery with Rev. David Autrey officiating.  Interment will be in West Hill Cemetery.
   There will be no visitation and the family will meet at the graveside on the day of the service.

Mrs. Rosa Nell Warren, age 91, of Summerville, GA died Thursday, October 13, 2011
at Shepherd Hills Nursing Home.
Mrs. Warren was born November 5, 1919 in Berryton, GA, the daughter of the late
Walker and Lula Yeardy McGraw. She was a homemaker and member of the North
Summerville Baptist Church. Mrs. Warren was preceded in death by her husband,
Archie H. Warren; and 6 Brothers and 3 Sisters.
Survivors include her children, Mary Warren Stephens and Archie William Warren,
both of Summerville, GA; brother, Clyde McGraw, Rome, GA; grandchildren,
Chris Warren, Warren Douglas Stephens, and Jason Ethan Stephens; great grandchildren,
Sarah Kate Stephens and Shelley Warren.
Graveside and interment services will be held at 3:00 p. m. Sunday, October 16, 2011 at
Perennial Springs Cemetery with her nephew, Buddy McGraw officiating. Active
pallbearers will be Warren Stephens, Jason Stephens, Chris Warren, Harold Blalock,
and Adam James. Honorary pallbearers will be Ellen James, Kathy Boss, Andy Boss,
Amanda Bailey, and Kay Bennett.
