Mrs. Ruth Waits Ponder Howell Obit (ER)

MRS. RUTH WAITS PONDER HOWELL, age 93, of Smallen Road, Lyerly, Georgia passed away Sunday, August 24, 2014, in the local rest home. Born in Polk County, Georgia on September 25, 1920, She was a daughter of the late George Stanley and Effie Coker Waits. Mrs. Howell was a member of Perennial Springs Baptist Church, and was retired from the sample department of the former Bigelow-Sanford Rug Mill. She was preceded in death by husband, the late Hillary Howell, Sisters- Edith McGraw, Faye Ozment, Carole Baker and Lodema Waits. One Brother- Kelsey Waits.

Surviving are- Daughter, Vivian Price of Lyerly, Son- Charles Ponder of Orange Park, Fla., Step-daughter- Gail Elrod of Summerville, Sister- Eddie Tinney of Summerville, Brother- Dudley Waits of Rockmart, GA. Eight Grandchildren, Fourteen Great Grandchildren, Four Great Great Grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 27, at 12:30 P.M. from the J. D. Hill Memorial Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Rev. Lee Byrd and Rev. Alton Stamey officiating, interment in Lyerly Cemetery. Active pallbearers- Tony McGraw, Bill Reed, Tim Kilgore, Dee Price, Todd Ponder and Tyler Wilson. Honorary Pallbearers- The Ladies Sunday School Class of Perennial Springs Baptist Church, Randy Marshall and Martha Chisolm. Mrs. Toni Woods Tutton Obit (M)

Mrs. Toni Woods Tutton, age 78, of Summerville, GA, died Friday, August 22, 2014, at her residence.

Mrs. Tutton was born March 23, 1936, in Lyerly, GA, daughter of the late William Calvin and Liela Brady Woods.  She was a member of the Summerville First Methodist Church.  Mrs. Tutton was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.  She was retired from the Chattooga County School System where she served as Food Service Director.  She also pioneered the Childrens Caravan Early Learning Program with Vickie Williams Jarrett and served as the Summerville Elementary School Administrator.  In addition to her parents, Mrs. Tutton was preceded in death by her brothers, Mell Woods and Bill Woods; and half sisters, Ann Woods Cornish and Massena Woods.

Mrs. Tutton is survived by her husband, Charles Meredith Tutton; sons, Charles Randall Tutton, William Meredith Tutton; a sister, Sue Woods Hurley; grandchildren, Nickolas Tutton and Natalie Tutton.

Graveside and interment services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, August 27, 2014, from the Lyerly Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be Randall Tutton, Bill Tutton, Nick Tutton, Eddie Hurley, Barry Hurley, Will Bowman, Tim Bowman, and Steve Jackson.

Mrs. Tutton will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 10:00 A.M. until the hour of service on Wednesday.

Mr. Weyman W. High Obit (ER)

MR. WEYMAN W. HIGH, age 89, of Summerville, Georgia, Gore Community, passed away Thursday, August 21, 2014, morning.

He was born January 9, 1925 in Chattooga County, the son of the late Flonnie Stephenson High and Enoch Ernest High. Mr. High was a 1943 graduate of Gore High School and served in the U. S. Army during WW II. Weyman married Mary Jackson in 1947, and they would have celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in September. Mr. High was employed by General Electric in Rome for 25 years and a member of the GE Retirees’ Social Club. Weyman continued to farm and raise cattle many years after his retirement from G.E. He helped organize the Gore Area Volunteer Fire Department, where he served as a volunteer fireman. He was a member, deacon, and church clerk for Unity Baptist Church, and was currently a member of the Summerville United Methodist Church,

Survivors include his wife, Mary; one daughter and son-in-law, Elaine and William Crouch; three granddaughters and spouses, Lindsey and Lance Brown, Whitney and Nate Rupp, and Christine Crouch; two great grandsons, Zeke Brown and Andrew Rupp; a number of nieces and nephews also survive as well as a special cousin, Kelli Renslow and other cousins.

Funeral services will be held Monday, August 25th, at 10:30 A.M. at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Austin, Rev. J. B. Cantrell, and Rev. Horace Stewart officiating, interment will be in the Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 until 10:30 A.M. at the Church. MRS.  MARGIE  JACKSON,  age  82,  of  LaFayette,  died  Monday,  August  18,  2014. 
She  was  a  member  of  Emmanuel  Baptist  Church  and  was   preceded  in  death  by  her  parents,  Luther  and  Ruth  Kinsey  Jackson;  Two  sisters,  Frances  Youngblood,  and  Syble  Gilliland;  Two  brothers,  Roy  and  Lester  Jackson.
She  is  survived  by  One  Son,  Gary  Hornung  and  his fiancé Debbie  Bryant,  of  Summerville;  One  sister,  Thelma  Jackson,  of  Chickamauga;  One  brother  and  sister-in-law,  Howard  “Bud”  (Shirley)  Jackson  of  LaFayette;  Special  friends,  Laura  Taylor,  Judy  Stump,  and   Margaret  O’Bryant;  Several  nieces and  nephews  also  survive.

Mrs. Margaret Ann Staton, age 76, of Summerville, Ga, passed away Monday, 
August 18, 2014, in Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
 
Mrs. Staton was born April 19, 1938, in Trion, Ga, the daughter of the late James
Paul "JP" Padgett and Clara Pettyjohn Booker. She had been employed at Barwick
Carpet, and Solution Fiber. Mrs. Staton was a member of Foster Mill Baptist Church.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Bobby
Staton.
 
Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Randy and Patti Staton; daughter
and son-in-law, Kathi and Phil Brooks; grandchildren, Josh Staton, Jeremy Staton,
and Damien Brooks; 2 great-grandchildren, Hartley Staton and Delainey Staton.
 
Funeral services for Mrs. Staton will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 19, 2014
at Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Pledger, and Rev. Kevin Norton
officiating. Burial will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will

Mrs. Barbara Jean Elsberry, age 81, of Summerville, Georgia passed away 
Sunday, August 17, 2014 at the Floyd Medical Center. Mrs. Elsberry was born
in Chattooga County, Georgia on February 25, 1933, daughter of the late
Charlie Teague and Dellie Busby Teague. She was of the Baptist Faith and
prior to her retirement in 1995, was employed with the Karastan Bigelow
Carpet Mill. Mrs. Elsberry was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years,
Ed Elsberry, on May 3, 2012; an infant son, Edwin Brinton Elsberry; an infant
daughter, Jennie Gale Elsberry; and her brothers, Donald Teague, Hoyt
Teague and Johnny Teague.
Mrs. Elsberry is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Eddie and Cindi Elsberry;
grandchildren, Trent Elsberry, Bradyn Elsberry, and Kasen Elsberry; brother and
sister-in-law, Eddie Ray and Geneva Teague; sisters and brothers-in-law, Shirley
and Rayburn Hughes and Linda and Gerald Carroll; brothers-in-law and

Mr. Tom Lewis Johnston Obit (ER)

MR. TOM LEWIS JOHNSTON, age 88, of Gore-Subligna Road, Summerville
 Georgia passed away Friday, August 15, 2015, at the residence.
  Born in Summerville on April 12, 1926, He was a son of the late T.P. and
 Zula Mae Ballenger Johnston.  Mr. Johnston graduated from Subligna High
 School and attended West Georgia College for two years, then was drafted
 into the U.S. Army, during WW II.  He served in Germany and Austria with
 the 36th Infantry Division and was an observer at the War Crimes Trials 
in Nuremburg, Germany; was a life member of the V.F.W.  He was a cattle
 farmer and worked for the Georgia Department of Agriculture retiring after 
28 years service. He was preceded in death by a sister Libby Neal Rich.
 
Surviving are His wife, Nancy Mann Johnston; daughter, Sandi Johnston
Cohen; son-Tom Neal Johnston (Lyn); step daughter, Tanya Queen
 (Ruben); step son, Stacy Mann (Tina); grand kids, Chuck Cohen and
 Samson Johnston; step grand kids, Amber Padgett, Lexie Mann, Macey
 Mann, Addie Queen, Mason Mann; niece, Joan Butler.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 17th at 3:00 PM from the J. D. Hill Memorial
 Chapel of Earle Rainwater Funeral Home with Jody Brock and Larry Scoggins officiating,
 interment in Green Hills Memory Gardens.

Mr. Loren Leslie “Les” Shives Obit (M)

Mr. Loren Leslie “Les” Shives, age 85, of Trion, GA, died Thursday, August 14, 2014, at the Redmond Regional Medical Center.
 
Mr. Shives was born February 27, 1929, in Knoxville, IA, son of the late Floyd Leslie Shives and Hazel Smith Shives.  He was a member of the Pennville Church of Christ and a Veteran of the U.S. Navy.  He was retired from the Town of Trion where he worked as a Recorder and had also worked as an office manager of the Washington Coca-Cola, and as general manager of the Bargain City U.S.A.  Mr. Shives was also the owner and operator of Shives Jewelry for many years.
 
Mr. Shives is survived by his wife, Betty J. Shives; son and daughter-in-law, Brent Alan and Tracy Jackson Shives; daughters and son-in-law, Jacklyn Shives, Cindy and Jeff Wells; brother, Otis G. Shives; sister and brother-in-law, Norma and Oscar Holcomb; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild.
 
Memorial services for Mr. Shives will be held at 1:00 P.M. Monday, August 18, 2014, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Min. Hugh Glaze and Min. Robbie Eversole officiating.

Mrs. Helen Marie “Granny” Allen, age 83, of Summerville, GA, died Tuesday, August 12, 2014, at the residence of her son and daughter-in-law.
 
Mrs. Allen was born November 7, 1930, in Piedmont, AL, daughter of the late Charlie Marvin Bryan and Mary Ellen Timms Bryan.  She was a member of the Four Mile Baptist Church, and prior to her retirement, she was employed with Mount Vernon Mills.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Allen; a son, Charles Keith Allen; brothers, James Howard Bryan, Charlie Marvin Bryan, Jr., and William Hoyt Bryan; sisters, Alma Timms, Flossy Mae Rosser, Dorothy Dean McClellan, and Mayron Veatch.
 
Mrs. Allen is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Mick and Becky Allen; a daughter, Brenda McPhail; grandchildren, Misty and Richard Miller, Matt McPhail, Andy Allen, and Ben Allen; great-grand grandchildren, Anslie Miller, Braden Miller, Reagan Miller, and Piper Miller.
 
Funeral services for Mrs. Allen will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 15, 2014, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joel Smith, Rev. Sanford DeBerry, and Rev.
