Beatrice Virginia “Bea” Alexander, Obit (C)

Mrs. Beatrice Virginia “Bea” Alexander, age 89 of Trion, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2023 in a local healthcare center.

Mrs. Alexander was born in Berryton, Georgia on March 13, 1934, daughter of the late William Henry Grady Cothran and Martha Beatrice Brown Cothran. She was a member of the South Summerville Baptist Church and was retired from the Lucky’s Supermarket in Menlo. She loved to cook, sew, can food and refinish furniture, but her favorite activity was spending time with her family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her first husband, Joseph E. Alexander; second husband, Ray Burkhalter; sister, Betty Sue Cothran; brothers, Bill Cothran, Jerry Cothran, Curtis Cothran, and Sammy Cothran; and a great grandson, Jordan Blane Duke.

Mrs. Alexander is survived by a son and daughter-in-in-law, Keith and Sondra Alexander; daughter and son-in-law, Jimmie and Barry Duke; grandchildren, Virginia Celeste Duke Hutchens and Crystal Denae Duke; great grandchildren, Madison Leigh Hutchens, Trystan Blake Hutchens, Brayden Tyler Hutchens, Joshua Brent Duke and Jeslyn Brook Duke; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Alexander will be held Sunday, March 26, 2023 at 3:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. Casey Bramlett officiating. Interment will follow in the West Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers will include Arnold Kilgo, Kenneth Blansit, John Sterner, Gary Duke, Blake Hutchens, Tyler Hutchens and Joshua Duke. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Staff of Oak View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, C-Hall Nurses and CNAs and the Staff of Affinis Hospice.

Mrs. Alexander will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 2:00 P.M. until the service hour.

Thomas “Tom” Clyde Drummond, Obit (ER)

Thomas “Tom” Clyde Drummond, age 81, of Summerville, Georgia, passed away on March 21, 2023, at his residence.

Tom was born on April 5, 1941, to the late Thomas “T.J.” Jefferson Drummond & Vivian Irene Kellett Drummond Bryant in Trion, Georgia. Tom was raised on Kellett Hill in the Summerville area and graduated from Summerville High School in 1959. He was an elite athlete and excelled in basketball, baseball & football at SHS. After graduation, he married Lola Bowers & moved to Statesboro, Georgia, where they began a family & he began studying Recreation at Georgia Southern University.

After graduating from GSU in 1964 with a degree in Recreation, Tom began working as Program Director at Dalton Parks & Recreation, kickstarting a 33-year career in the field. He worked for the State of Georgia and was also a Director in Carrollton, GA. He later became the Director of Clayton County Parks & Recreation. Tom was instrumental in starting many recreational programs all over the state of Georgia. After retiring at the age of 51, Tom moved to Jekyll Island, Georgia, where he enjoyed sailing, playing golf, tennis and restoring classic cars. Tom moved back to his hometown of Summerville in 2016, due to declining health and to be near family.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and Stepfather, Edward R. Bryant & Stepmother Lillian E. Drummond.

He is survived by his four children: Kelli (Tim) Winters, Kit (Randy) Willingham, Matt (Shelley) Drummond, Laine Drummond; grandchildren: Josh (Emily) Hurley, Lacey (Willys) Hames, Leslie (Blake) Gazaway, Jessie (Kyle) Shepard, Emily Green (Justin Smith), Wil (Alyssa) Drummond, Cal Drummond; Ten great-grandchildren; One great-great-grandchild; Former wife & mother of his children, Lola Bedford; Uncle, Gordon Kellett; Special Cousin Jamie Frady and a host of special, life-long friends.

A Memorial Service for Mr. Drummond will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 22nd, at 290 Woodhaven Drive, Summerville, Georgia.

Georgia Evelyn “Carol” Davis, Obit (M)

Mrs. Georgia Evelyn “Carol” Davis, age 87, of Summerville, GA, died Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at her residence.

Mrs. Davis was born October 20, 1935, in Summerville, GA, daughter of the late Lewis Houston and Gertrude Ray Helton. She was a member of Berryton Baptist Church and prior to her retirement, was employed with Harriet and Henderson.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Joe Davis; and a daughter, Mary Wofford.

Survivors include her daughter, Freda Davis; brothers, Harold (Vesta) Helton, Charles Wayne (Jayne) Helton; grandchildren, Jill Davis and Justin Wofford; and 1 great-grandchild.

Graveside and interment services for Mrs. Davis will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at Greenhills Memory Gardens with Rev. Mickey Skates officiating.

Mrs. Barbara Jean Edwards age 82 of Summerville, GA passed away Sunday, March 19, 2023 at a local healthcare facility.

Mrs. Edwards was born November 4, 1940 in Trion, GA to the late Collis and Francis Reynolds Styles. She was retired from Lyerly Elementary School. She loved her family and enjoyed cooking, baking, her pets, fishing, and being outdoors. Her true gift was helping others.

Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her daughter, Cindy Black; brother, Waymond Styles; along with another sister and brother-in-laws.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby Edwards; son, Danny Edwards (Rhonda); son-in-law, Reagan Black; sister, Penny Woods (Mike); 5 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Graveside and interment services to celebrate the life of Mrs. Edwards will be held at 3:00 PM Wednesday, March 22, 2023 at Lyerly Cemetery with Mr. Mike Woods officiating.

Mrs. Nelson was born November 18, 1938, in Carbon Hill, AL, daughter of the late Henry Edgar and Bessie Lee Early Nelson. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church, and prior to her retirement, was employed with Pharr Yarns of Georgia.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Nelson was preceded in death by her first husband, Bobby McGinnis, Sr.; siblings, Tommy Nelson, Gertrude Montgomery, Hazel Nelson, Jackie McPherson, and Judy Hood.

Survivors include her husband of 20 years, Billy Ray Nelson; son, Bobby Joe (Marquetta) McGinnis, Jr.; brother, Henry Allen (Donna) Nelson; sisters, Mildred Nelson, Nancy (Johnny) Nelson, Helen (Bill) Derrick, Ellen Newberry, and Linda (Jerry) Brown; grandchildren, Laci Smitherman, Mahayla McGraw; great-grandchildren, Raegan Smitherman, Zackery McGraw, and McKenna McGraw; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Slayton was born January 8, 1945, daughter of the late J.C. Thomas and Violet Hunter. She was a member of Old Way Baptist Church and had previously worked at Palmer’s Farmers Market.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Slayton was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Charles Slayton; brother, Buck Hunter; sister, Mary Ann Wells; and great-grandchildren, JoAnna Grace Shafer, John David Shafer, and Sawyer Hunter Shafer.

A native of Trion, Georgia, She was born to the late Lonnie Carl and Mae Brown Treadaway on November 16, 1940. Mrs. Speer was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church and retired from the weave shop of Riegel Textile Corporation. In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by, brothers the late Jimmy Treadaway, Jerry Treadaway, Randy Treadaway, Charles Treadaway, and Tommy Treadaway.

Surviving are Her husband, Jerry Speer; sisters, Betty Mahan (Lewis), Debbie Pyper (Bud), Dianne Watkins (David), Sandra Kirby; brothers, Billy Treadaway (Rita), and Bobby Treadaway; a special friend, Rhonda Pollard; several Nieces and Nephews also survive.

Mrs. Norton was born September 24, 1926, in Centre, AL, daughter of the late David Thomas and Della Dora Cash Tucker. She was a member of Four Mile Baptist Church, and prior to her retirement, was employed with Best Manufacturing. Mrs. Norton loved her church, her family, and enjoyed traveling and growing flowers.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Norton was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Norton, Jr.; an infant daughter, Beverly Diane Norton; and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her son, Larry (Myra) Norton; daughters, Joan (Dale) Willingham, Linda (Emory) Tallent, and Karen (David) Fletcher; brothers, Jamie Tucker, Leon Tucker, and John Tucker; a sister, Ann Brown; 7 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

MRS. VIOLA PLEDGER LAWMAN, age 100, of Marietta, Georgia, formerly of Summerville, Georgia, passed away Thursday, March 2, 2023, in Marietta. Mrs. Lawman was born on March 16, 1922, in Summerville, Georgia to the late Cicero and Ida Mitchell Pledger. She was a member of South Summerville Baptist Church and was retired from Bohannon’s Store. In addition to Parents, She was preceded in death by her husband Joe Thomas Lawman, a sister-Oneida Owens, and brothers-Bill Pledger and Winston Pledger.

Surviving are daughters, Deborah Lawman Gerber, Linda Lawman Johannes, and Nancy Lawman Moon; grandsons-Bill Moon, Keith Moon, Travis Wright, Greg Wright, and Nathan Wright; several Great Grandchildren, Great Great Grandchildren, Nieces, and Nephews also survive.
