A cold front moving through Georgia is bringing a noticeable change in the weather for Labor Day, with cooler temperatures replacing the heat that has dominated much of the past several days.

In Chattooga County and across Northwest Georgia, partly sunny skies are expected today with a high near 88 degrees. Southeast winds will be around 5 to 10 miles per hour.

The cooler weather follows a round of showers and thunderstorms that moved across the region Sunday. Behind the front, an east-to-northeast flow is bringing cooler air into North Georgia. The National Weather Service says the pattern will make temperatures feel considerably more comfortable compared with the recent stretch of hot weather.

There remains only a small chance for additional rain tonight. A 10 percent chance of showers or thunderstorms is in the forecast between 7 and 8 PM, followed by partly cloudy skies. The overnight low will be around 69 degrees. East winds of 5 to 10 miles per hour could occasionally gust as high as 25 miles per hour.

The relatively comfortable temperatures will continue Tuesday. Mostly sunny skies and a high near 88 are expected, with southeast winds of 5 to 10 miles per hour and occasional gusts around 15.

Wednesday will be sunny and slightly warmer with a high near 90.

Temperatures will gradually climb during the second half of the week as the weather pattern changes and additional moisture returns to the Southeast. That will also bring back better chances for afternoon showers and thunderstorms.

Thursday will be sunny for much of the day before a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms develops after 2 PM. The high will be around 91.

Rain chances increase to 50 percent Friday, primarily during the afternoon, with a high near 90. Another 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms is forecast Saturday, followed by a 30 percent chance Sunday.

Overnight temperatures will remain fairly consistent throughout the week, generally ranging from the upper 60s to around 70 degrees.

For Labor Day activities today, however, the forecast is considerably quieter: partly sunny, less hot and largely dry, with temperatures topping out in the upper 80s.
