Drought conditions are continuing across Chattooga County and much of Northwest Georgia, but forecasters say some relief could be on the way as rain chances increase heading into the Easter weekend.

According to the latest data, all of Chattooga County is currently experiencing drought conditions, with ongoing dry weather leading to below-normal rainfall, reduced soil moisture, and lower stream levels across the area.

While much of Georgia remains under more serious drought levels, Northwest Georgia has been dealing with persistent dryness that continues to impact lawns, agriculture, and increase wildfire risk.

Rain chances will remain limited through today, with most of the activity staying south and east of the area. However, moisture will begin to increase on Saturday, with a better chance of showers developing later in the day.

The most widespread rainfall for Chattooga County and surrounding areas is expected Saturday night into Sunday as a cold front moves through the region. That system is expected to bring steady rain and a few thunderstorms, though severe weather is not anticipated.

Even with the incoming rain, forecasters say totals will likely be modest and not enough to significantly improve drought conditions across Northwest Georgia.

Officials continue to encourage residents to conserve water where possible and remain cautious with outdoor burning as dry conditions persist.
