The IRS says the nation’s 2026 tax filing season opens Monday, January 26, 2026, when the agency will begin accepting and processing 2025 federal income tax returns. Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2026 to file and pay any taxes due.

The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual income tax returns this season, with most people filing electronically.

This filing season also reflects updates tied to the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, which the IRS says could affect federal taxes, credits, and deductions. The agency is directing taxpayers to online resources explaining what’s new and how it may impact refunds and tax bills.

Helpful IRS tools and options highlighted for taxpayers include:

  • IRS Individual Online Account to view balances, payments, and tax records

  • “Where’s My Refund?” to track refund status after filing

  • IRS Free File for qualified taxpayers, plus Free File Fillable Forms available regardless of income starting January 26

  • Free preparation options through IRS-certified volunteers with the VITA and TCE programs

  • MilTax, a free filing option for eligible military members and some veterans

The IRS is also urging taxpayers to stay alert for tax scams and fraud and to consider direct deposit for faster refunds.
