Young people interested in outdoor adventure, learning new skills and making new friends will have an opportunity to discover what Scouting has to offer during a Scout Recruitment Night tonight in Summerville.

Pack 38 and Troop 7 will host the event from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, August 13, at the Scout Hut, 220 Highway 100 in Summerville.

The recruitment night is open to youth from kindergarten through age 16 and their families. No previous Scouting experience is required, and there is no cost to attend the recruitment event.

Rather than simply hearing about Scouting, young people attending Thursday’s event will have an opportunity to try some of the skills Scouts learn throughout the year.

Interactive stations are planned for first aid, orienteering, flag folding, fishing, fire building, knot tying and tent camping skills. Participants will also learn about identifying animal tracks and leaves and the principles of Leave No Trace, which teaches responsible enjoyment and protection of the outdoors.

Cool treats will also be available during the evening.

Local Scout leaders and current Scouts will be on hand to meet families, answer questions and provide information about the programs offered by Pack 38 and Troop 7. Families can also learn about upcoming camping trips, community service projects, outdoor activities and opportunities for young people to develop leadership skills.

“Scouting offers youth the chance to learn practical skills, build confidence, make friends, and develop a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors,” organizers said. “This event is a great way for families to see firsthand why Scouts have so much fun.”

The event is open to youth throughout Chattooga County. While Thursday’s recruitment night is free to attend, an annual membership fee applies to young people who decide to join the Scouting program.
