A Lyerly man was arrested on a DUI charge following a traffic stop on Highway 27 early Monday morning, September 7.

According to a Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Deputy Matt Wilson was advised shortly after 2 AM about a vehicle that had crossed into Chattooga County while traveling southbound on Highway 27 toward Summerville.

The deputy located the vehicle, described in the report as a 2025 white Toyota Camry with an Alabama registration, and began following it as it traveled south on Highway 27.

According to the report, the deputy observed the vehicle cross the fog line while traveling near Marble Springs Road and conducted a traffic stop.

The driver was identified as 23-year-old Alex Angel Conseco of Lyerly.

The Sheriff’s Office report says the deputy made contact with Conseco and detected what he described as a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from the driver. The deputy also reported that Conseco had bloodshot, watery eyes and appeared to have difficulty retrieving his driver’s license.

According to the report, Conseco initially denied drinking alcohol but later allegedly told the deputy he had consumed one alcoholic beverage. When asked what type, the report states that Conseco said he was unsure but believed it was a drink he had consumed at a restaurant approximately three hours earlier.

The deputy then asked Conseco to perform standardized field sobriety tests.

According to the Sheriff’s Office report, the deputy documented several indicators during the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus, Walk-and-Turn and One-Leg Stand tests. The report states Conseco missed heel-to-toe steps, stepped off the line, made an improper turn and stopped walking during the Walk-and-Turn test. During the One-Leg Stand test, the deputy reported that Conseco swayed and used his arms for balance.

The report also states that Conseco refused a roadside Alco-Sensor test.

Based on the deputy’s observations, the driver’s alleged admission to consuming alcohol and his performance on the field sobriety evaluations, Conseco was placed under arrest for DUI – Alcohol.

According to the report, Conseco was handcuffed and read Georgia’s implied-consent notice for blood. The deputy reported that Conseco refused the blood draw.

Conseco was then transported by another deputy to the Chattooga County Jail.

The Sheriff’s Office report says the vehicle was searched based on probable cause for open containers, but no open containers were located. The vehicle was left in a parking spot, and the female passenger was given a ride to McDonald’s by a deputy.

Conseco was charged with DUI – Alcohol, a misdemeanor, along with traffic offenses, according to the arrest report.
